    Why move to Aviemore

The small town of Aviemore meaning “The big mountain face in Scottish Gaelic”, is home to around 4000 people and has become a popular tourist destination. The town is Britain’s most visited ski resort during the UK’s winter months offering activities such as mountain climbing, hiking and of course skiing.

Aviemore sits in a beautiful area which forms part of the Cairngorms National Park in the Highlands of Scotland. There are excellent views of the Cairngorms from various places within the town and the Aviemore “stone circle” is strangely located within a residential neighbourhood of the town too. A 4000-year-old gathering place it is well worth a visit.

The town began to grow as a result of it becoming a railway junction in 1898, following which the Highland Railway became a major employer.
Employment opportunities are limited; however, the City of Inverness is 30 miles from Aviemore, a 40-minute commute by train.

The larger town of Forres also a straightforward commute of around 36 miles, quicker to access via the main A490 and A5 roads as there is no direct access via railway.

    Things to do in Aviemore

Aviemore is a mecca for outdoor activities, partly due to its stunning location of mountains, valleys rivers and lochs. There is something for everyone no matter what your level or experience.

The Cairngorms National Park is the largest National park in the UK and visited by thousands each year. Twice the size of the Lake District, it has more mountains, forest paths, rivers, lochs, wildlife hotspots, friendly villages and distilleries than you can possibly imagine. If you are lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of a Scottish wildcat as they call the region home. Endangered and highly secretive, these fabulous felines are tricky to spot in the wild.

More people come to ski in the Cairngorms than at any other resort in the UK. Hillwalkers and rock-climbers will never run out of routes to try. There are oodles of top-class mountain-bike trails, cross-country skiing trails, pony treks and orienteering courses to get involved in whilst you’re here.

Step back in time at the Highland Folk Museum. Visitors are offered a flavour of how Highland people lived and worked from the 1700s up until the 1950s.

There are over 30 historical buildings which are furnished appropriately to their time period. Some have been built from scratch on-site and some have been moved here from other locations. With a café and a gift shop on-site there is plenty to keep everyone occupied all day.

Being sparsely populated in many places, the schools in the north of Scotland can be rather spaced out; children often have to bus to their closest high schools.

Aviemore nursery and Aviemore Primary are the only schools in the town for younger children. The primary school follows the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence. Combined, these schools provide education for children aged 3-12 years.

The closest secondary is in nearby Kingussie 13 miles away. Kingussie High School has a good reputation and has gained excellent grades in its latest National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher results.

Data for the school’s exam performance indicates that year on year Kingussie students outperform several other Scottish schools as well as the Highland and National average.
