Warmly known to locals as the ‘Auld Grey Toun’ for its mass of grey stone buildings and church Abbeys, Dunfermline is a historic city and former capital of Scotland. While the town no longer continues to hold such privileged status, it remains a major employment hub for West Fife and hosts some of the largest employers in the UK, including Sky UK, Lloyds and Nationwide.
Dunfermline has enjoyed significant expansion since 1999 and regeneration has become a priority for the town in recent years again with further plans for the development of 6,000 new homes, three new schools, along with significant investment in local infrastructure and leisure facilities.
New housing developments have been specifically aimed at drawing first time buyers into the area and house prices are cheaper than Perth. Dunfermline is also very well connected for young professionals with easy access on to the M90 and a convenient commuting distance to Edinburgh — only 35 minutes by rail. The nearest airport (Edinburgh) is only a 25-minute drive away.
The huge selection of 126 well-tended parks dotted throughout the town and the large selection of highly regarded schools also makes Dunfermline a population location with young families. Many of the parks have amenities suited to families, such as bouncy castles, adventure play areas, bowling greens and tennis courts.
The town has also gained a reputation as being Fife’s main shopping destination and hosts a mixture of shopping outlets, malls, high street brands and independent shops. Retail is incredibly important to the local economy and accounts for 18% of all employment in the area.
With many historical sites to explore such as the Dunfermline Royal Palace and iconic entertainment venues such as Carnegie Hall, you will not be short of activities to get involved with.
