Fort Nelson marks Armistice Day
Staff, school children and members of the general public all paid tribute at Victorian Fort Nelson this morning. Staff at the fort fired an 18-pound gun at 11am, to mark the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
This year the commemorations have a special significance at Fort Nelson, this being the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War, where the fort was used as a depot and training establishment for soldiers leaving for France.
Royal Armouries’ Keeper of Artillery Nicholas Hall said: ‘Always on Armistice Day we mark the two minutes silence with the 18-pound gun salute from the First World War.
“The remembrance of the First World War should continue as a memorial for those who went off to die.”
