    Chichester is a historic and affluent city in the heart of West Sussex. Encased within Roman walls, the 900-year-old cathedral, is set amongst four quarters of fine Georgian period properties and an eclectic mix of independent shops and some of England’s finest tea rooms.

    Location plays huge part in the city’s appeal. Sandwiched between the South Downs National Park, the sandy beaches of West Wittering and the Chichester Harbour, the area if not short of stunning natural scenery.

    Chichester is well connected to other major cities, being just one hour from both Brighton and Portsmouth, which houses an international airport and ferries to other destinations. Regular railway connections run to London Victoria via Gatwick Airport.

    Schools & Education

    There is a good range of primary and secondary schools within the catchment area of Chichester.

    Jessie Younghusband Primary was rated as ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted and both Lancastrian Infants and Orchard Gardens primaries received an overall rating of ‘good’. Chichester High School was also awarded an Ofsted rating of ‘outstanding’ at its last inspection.

    Chichester also has three preparatory schools (Oakwood Preparatory School, The Prebendal School and Westbourne House), all with excellent reputations.

    Chichester College, formerly Chichester College of Arts, Science and Technology offers both foundation-level and degree-equivalent courses, mainly focused towards vocational qualifications for industry.

    The college has recently made significant investment in upgrading facilities and is now offering a wider range of subject areas in its prospectus.

    The city is also home to Chichester University which came into being in 2005 and has two campuses (the other in Bognor Regis), both of which have benefited from National Lottery Funding.

    Between the marina, Cathedral and National Park, it should come as no surprise that the local economy is based largely on tourism and related industries.

    A recent Government study has shown that there is an increasing number of small businesses starting up in the area, which are creating employment opportunities and in turn contributing to the local economy.

    Cambridge Econometrics predict that there will be substantial increases of finance jobs, business and other market services roles in coastal West Sussex over the next decade or so however.

    Situated in nearby Bognor Regis, are some large companies such as Next, Marks & Spencer and Rolls-Royce. Rolls-Royce has revealed plans to create 100 extra job in its facility in Goodwood and they intend to build a new factory in the area.

    The first phase of the ‘largest’ housing development in Chichester’s history has now been approved. This will also help to create jobs within the building and construction sectors and is expected to take several years to complete.

    Things to Do in Chichester

    Chichester is a vibrant and busy city which is great for socialising. There is a great selection of pubs, eateries and tea-rooms.

    The Buttery cafe at the Crypt dates from the late 12th century. It is an incredibly historic building situated only a few shops down from the famous ‘Clock Tower’ in the centre of Chichester and is a great spot for lunch.

    There are also several long-distance routes for walkers, cyclists and riders in the area, some of which, like the Centurion Way to West Dean, start in the city. Centurion Way was opened in the mid-1990s and runs along the former railway line.

    The marina is famous in its own right and attracts visitors from all over the globe. Recently it has been graded with Five Gold Anchors – the Yacht Harbour Association’s most coveted award and is a popular haunt for sailors and water sports.

    Chichester Festival Theatre is also one of the UK’s flagship producing and touring theatres, whose annual summer season attracts actors, writers and directors from the West End theatre and the USA.

    As a desirable location with a fantastic range of amenities, property in Chichester does not come cheap. That is not say however that it is unaffordable.

     

     

    Chichester’s city centre offers a good mixture of property styles. From studio apartments on sale for £85,000, up to large family homes at around £600,000. The current average value is £432,000 and over the past year homes have increased by a healthy 3.61%.

     

    The prime locations are those inside the city walls which include Grade II listed Georgian townhouses with original features such as open fireplaces. Spinney Lane is one of the most expensive streets, where homes sell for close to £3,000,000.

     

    There are some reasonably priced properties to be found for those venturing further afield. Just north of the city is the popular Parklands suburb where who can pick up a well-priced Georgian terrace. Or if you’re looking for a sea view head to one of the surrounding villages, such as West Wittering, which is home to several large detached homes.
