    Downham Market, sometimes simply referred to as Downham, is a market town located in the county of Norfolk. Nicely placed it sits on the edge of the Fens on the River Great Ouse.

    The town began as a Saxon settlement, sited around the elevated ground on which the local Church was built.

    Downham is one of the county’s oldest Market Towns and was granted its Market status by the year 1050. The attractive marketplace is immediately identifiable by the splendid and unusual black and white clock. Today market days are still held on Fridays and Saturdays as well as a craft and collectibles market every other Saturday – a place that attracts lots of people from around the area.

    There is a real community feel to the town, with a host of regular well attended events held throughout the year. Although Downham is well-equipped with facilities, offering both a modern leisure centre and a weekly market, nearby are several larger towns including Kings Lynn and Wisbech. Look out for St Winnolds Day and St. George’s Day celebrations, the Downham Market Water Festival, and the Christmas lights switch-on ceremony.

    You can also find plenty of shops to browse in the town, including craft shops, independent stores, and boutiques. Combine these local businesses with well-known retailers and department stores and you are in for a pleasurable shopping experience.

    Travelling further afield is enhanced by Downham’s great connections. You can reach Cambridge in 35 minutes, Ely in 18 and London in 90, on a fast train. The seaside at Hunstanton takes around 45 minutes. It is easy to see why so many people love Downham Market.

    Three primary schools serve the town – Hillcrest, Denver, and Nelson Primary. Ofsted has inspected all three and found them to be “good”.

    Downham Market High has experienced some problems; however, measures were put in place to address its shortcomings. In 2022, According to Ofsted inspectors, the school has had its best rating for many years and is now rated as being a “good” school.

    When it is time for students to move onto further education, they have to travel outside of the town.

    One of the closest colleges is the College of West Anglia, 13 miles from the town. The college has more than 10,000 students and 800 staff and plenty of courses available.

    Things to do in Downham Market

    There is no chance of being bored because you will find some interesting things to do and see in and close to the town.

    Sailing and boating enthusiasts will certainly feel at home here. The Norfolk Broads are a popular holiday area situated in the triangle of Norwich, Lowestoft, and Sea Palling, where 30 “broads” provide miles of navigable waterways.

    Cruise along the river to Denver, where there are several moorings along your voyage where you can stop and enjoy the unique landscape.

    In and around the town are some stunning countryside walks, bridle paths, and cycleways.
    All offer a unique way to enjoy Norfolk’s pretty scenery.

    There are plenty of small villages with traditional pubs where you can stop and enjoy a spot of lunch.

    If you fancy a change from rural landscapes, you can take a trip to the coast to the north.

    Less than an hour from Downham is the little town of Hunstanton. It is a traditional seaside town. It faces west across The Wash, making it one of the few places on the east coast where the sun can be seen setting over the sea.

    Downham is often referred to as the “gingerbread town” due to its many little cottages (made of a cakey sandstone) located in the town centre.
