Why Move to Helston
At the northern end of the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall, approximately 12 miles from Penzance and 9 miles from Falmouth, you will find the small town of Helston. The former cattle market town is best known for the annual Furry Dance (known locally as the Flora Dance), said to originate from the medieval period.
Characteristically Cornish, in an area that is largely unspoilt, Helston arguably has access to some of the best attractions and scenery Cornwall has to offer, not surprising as the Lizard Peninsula is one of the UK’s 46 Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Helston boasts a boating lake, a museum, a theme park, a nearby seal sanctuary, and a long stretch of sandy beach (2 miles away) all surrounded by beautiful countryside.
First being granted its market charter way back in April 1201 by King John, regular farmers’ markets are still held to this day. The market is complemented by a buzzing town centre filled with some excellent small shops selling local produce where you can find all you need for day-to-day living.
Whist the warmer summer months attract thousands of visiting holidaymakers, the winter in Helston is much less frenetic. Geographically the town is one of many which is west facing and feels the full force of the south-westerly prevailing winds. Hundreds of shipwrecks scatter the area just off the coast!
To those seeking a fantastic summer home or cosy winter retreat spent by the log fire, Helston provides both. But it is also home to over 11,000 inhabitants who live here permanently and wholly justifiably love the place come rain or shine.
Schools & Education
Long before you move into your new home, you will need to think about education if you are relocating with children.
Education standards right across Cornwall are generally good with most locations having their fair share of excellent schools and a smattering of those who need improvement.
Being classed as a small town, Helston is home to just three local primary schools, all of which have smaller than average class sizes, which is a great advantage.
These are Parc Eglos, St. Michael’s, and Nansloe Primary. All have had Ofsted inspections and have been rated as either “good” or “outstanding”.
These three schools plus several others in the area filter into Helston’s only secondary school, Helston Community College.
A co-ed school for students aged from 11-18years. Ofsted inspected in 2013 and found the college good with some outstanding attributes.
The school also has a sixth form which Ofsted noted: “The sixth form is good, and standards are continuing to rise”.
Things to do in Helston
As you would expect from a Cornish town, within a few miles, there are some fantastic beaches to discover. One of the best and the closest, in the area, is Porthleven Beach.
Porthleven offers three glorious miles of sand and historic harbour, plus an array of high-quality restaurants.
Although fantastic for building sandcastles it is only recommended for paddling as there are strong currents here. It is a mecca however for surfers.
Flambards Theme Park is the perfect destination for an unforgettable family day out with its fun mix of rides, indoor attractions, and entertainment.
You will find an interesting and eclectic collection of items at the Museum of Cornish Life.
Housed in Helston’s former Market House and Drill Hall, founded in 1949, the building was originally designed as the town’s Market House in 1837.
Coronation Park is a great place to take the children. The large lake hires boats in the shape of swans, there is a kiddies play area, a skate park, and alongside is a lovely little café so you can relax while the children play.
For those who like to walk, the coastal path from Loe Bar leads into Penrose Estate with some lovely circular walks and there is a seasonal café at the stables by Penrose House.

Property prices
As with many areas in Cornwall, homes are in great demand here and it has become an extremely popular location for the “second home brigade”.
Helson has a limited portfolio when it comes to the property market, with Zoopla advertising 26 homes for sale.
The bonus for Helston is that it sits a couple of miles inland, just far enough to make it more affordable when it comes to prices in this beautiful part of the UK.
The attractive town is dotted with superb historic Georgian buildings and stone cottages which are in great demand and sell quickly.
While sought-after posh Cornish coastal towns such as Fowey will set you back an average of £616,518 for a detached property, detached properties in Helston sell for the much more affordable average price of £495,532.
