Turkish scrap merchant buys HMS Liverpool
The former HMS Liverpool and HMS Manchester have been sold to a Turkish scrap merchant who will break up the vessels.
The MoD has not revealed how much money has been attained from the contract with the Turkish company Leyal Ship Recycling, as the figures are commercially sensitive.
HMS Liverpool was stationed in the Falklands for six months during 1982 and HMS Manchester has participated in the Royal Navy’s Global ’86 tour. It will be a sad day to see the ships leave Portsmouth.
Both ships were decommissioned to make way for the Royal Navy’s new Type 45 destroyers based in Portsmouth.
