    Working in Basingstoke

Basingstoke was chosen to accommodate part of the London ‘overspill’ as part of the Greater London Plan in 1944. Formerly it was a small market town which was recorded in the Domesday Book. It remained a small market town until the 1950s.

During the 1960’s however, it began to expand rapidly. This expansion was due in part to its location which offers easy access to other towns and cities in the region; London 48 miles, Southampton 30 miles, Reading 16 miles and 19 miles from the county town of Winchester.

Nicknamed “Doughnut City” or “Roundabout City” because of the number of roundabouts in the town which aid a rapid road network.

Today, it is seen as a prosperous town, it enjoys an above-average standard of living and low unemployment.

It is an economic centre, and the location of some notable companies; the UK headquarters of Sun Life Financial of Canada, The Automobile Association, ST Ericsson, GAME, Motorola and Sony Professional Solutions (Europe).

Other industries include drug manufacturing, IT, communications, insurance and electronics.

With a number of new housing developments, a new shopping centre Festival Place and new businesses opening their doors, Basingstoke is an exciting and enterprising place to live.

    Basingstoke Schools & Education

Educational needs are well served. Each neighbourhood in the town has at least one primary school, while secondary schools are distributed around the town on larger campuses.

Among the highly regarded primaries are St Mary’s C of E Junior School and Overton C of E School both awarded an “Outstanding” at their latest inspections.

Basingstoke has two large further education colleges. A sixth-form college, Queen Mary’s College (QMC) and Basingstoke College of Technology (BCoT).
