The town is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. The name “Chippenham” is thought to mean “river meadow of a man called Cippa”. Once the location of a royal hunting lodge owned by Alfred the Great, the town remained small but began its first growth spirt following the arrival of the railway in the mid 1800’s.

Expansion of Chippenham has occurred again in more recent years mainly due to the development of the South West regional economy as a whole and because of new housing developments such as Cepen Park North and Pewsham Estate.
