    Why Move to Greenock?

Laying along the south side of the Firth of Clyde, the Scottish town of Greenock is located in the historic county of Renfrewshire. It is renowned as the birthplace of James Watt who pioneered the steam engine and as being home to the first-ever dock which was built on the Clyde in 1711.

The area was once dominated by the ship building industry. Mighty shipyards employed thousands and a large proportion of the world’s ships were built here until well into the 20th century. The port is still operational, but the workforce is on a much smaller scale focussing on the cruise-ship business.

Other industries have emerged which include engineering, textile manufacturing, sugar refining, and the production of office equipment.

Greenock itself is set between the towns of Gourock and Port Glasgow on the Western Central Lowlands of Scotland. Surrounded by hills, and largely confined to the waterfront, along which it stretches for approximately 4 miles.

There are good shopping and leisure facilities and, although not regarded as a visitor destination, there are some interesting attractions in the vicinity.

The biggest attraction of Greenock is that it is a financially economical town in which to live. The cost of living, housing, council tax and general living costs are a lot lower when compared to other large regional towns and cities such as Largs, Gourock and Glasgow.

As the town sits around 17 miles from Paisley and 25 miles from Glasgow or just over an hour by train, many people choose to commute for work whist benefitting from the cheaper cost of living that Greenock offers. Not short of railway stations, residents in Greenock have a 9 to choose from!

    Greenock Schools & Education

The council and administrative area of Inverclyde is responsible for education in the area.

There is a good selection of state schools with around 19 primaries and 6 secondary schools. Whist the wider county of Renfrewshire has three special schools for children with varying degrees of learning difficulties.

Cedars School of Excellence is the only independent primary school in the town. A Christian School catering for children from 5 – 18 years. Cedars is recognised internationally as a leader in the use of educational technology.

Further education is provided by Paisley Campus of West College Scotland in Paisley, which caters to around 20,000 students.

Renfrewshire contains a campus of the University of the West of Scotland. Holding a regional reputation for vocational undergraduate and post-graduate courses the university currently has 17,025 students, with approximately 1300 staff, spread across six schools of learning.
