    Reasons to move to Montreal:

Considered one of the world’s most liveable cities, Montreal places a strong emphasis on work-life balance and ‘Joie de vivre’ meaning ‘the joy of living’.
Montreal was named ‘Canada’s Cultural Capital’ by Monocle Magazine and a UNESCO ‘City of Design’.

Housing in Montreal is much cheaper than the other major Canadian cities, including Toronto, Vancouver and Ottawa.

Montreal is Canada’s second most populated city and is located in the predominately French-speaking province of Quebec.

A truly multicultural melting pot, you can stroll through the streets of Montreal and feel as if you’re in Paris one second and Little Italy the next.

Franglais is actually a thing too. There’s no other place in the world where you can hear locals express themselves in a unique blend of French and English.

The city draws on its diverse set of European inspired influences and former residents to produce an eclectic ‘foodie scene’ across entire streets and neighbourhoods.

Of all the major cities in Canada, Montreal is the one to head for if you are looking for an active social life, enjoy plenty of culture and an excellent standard of living.

With an action-packed calendar of social events which includes over a hundred festivals every year, life in Montreal is varied and vibrant enough to rival that of major US cities.

While Canada isn’t generally known for its short travel distances, Montreal is a mere 8 hour-drive from New York City, Boston and Toronto and just 2 hours from Ottawa, the Canadian capital.

If you’re looking for a Canadian city with a vibrant nightlife, a mix of affordable housing and some secluded parks and open spaces, then Montreal ticks each and every box.

    Property

    • The average house price in Montreal was $363,400 (£225,160) as of June 2019, according to The Canadian Magazine of Immigration.
    • Rent is cheaper in Montreal when compared with other main Canadian cities.
    • Montreal is home to lots of British expats as well as French-Canadian neighbourhoods such as Notre Dame de Grace.

The average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in downtown Montreal is about $1174 (£727). In Ottawa, the same downtown apartment will cost you roughly $1286 (£796).

There are lots of places available in Montreal and to entice you to choose a property you might find deals too, such as free rent or utilities for the first month or two, something practically unheard of in the UK.

While renting is cheaper compared to other Canadian cities, buying property in Montreal is markedly more expensive and values are set to rise further.

In the Greater Montreal Area, the average price of a home is forecast to increase by 3 per cent by the end of 2019, and it will outperform other Canadian urban centres.

When it comes to choosing which neighbourhood to throw down your roots each borough of Montreal has its own atmosphere and character.

Before choosing your neighbourhood, it’s best to balance your ability to speak French (or not) with your area.

Some areas of Montreal, like Hampstead and Westmount are predominantly English, while others like Notre Dame de Grace, are very French. Here, you will find fewer English signs, newspapers in corner stores, and neighbours with who you can chat.

    Living costs

    • Rent in Montreal is 60% lower than in London.
    • Basic utilities (including electricity, gas and heating) for a studio apartment cost around CA$272 a month (£95) 65% cheaper than London.
    • The average price paid for two eating out at an average restaurant is 26% lower than the centre of London.

Whilst the standard of living in Montreal is high the cost of living is surprisingly low in many areas.

Apart from the price of the weekly food shop (17% higher than London) everything else (from consumer goods, rent, eating out are all cheaper when compared to London.

This means that despite the average salary currently being CA$3124 (£1935) compared to London’s £3794, living in Canada will actually give you substantially more purchasing power.

You can live very comfortably in Montreal knowing that it is a ‘swings and roundabout’ situation financially when compared to costs in the UK.

Travel is not only incredibly efficient but cheaper than other cities too. An adult monthly pass in Toronto currently costs $141.50 (£88) but in Montreal that same pass is just $83 (£51)

That’s if you even choose to use it. Cycling is a way of life in the warmer months when huge numbers of people choose to cycle to work and there are 438 cycle routes to explore in your spare time too.

    Jobs market

    • Canada’s economy is the eleventh largest in the world and Montreal is a massive contributor to this.
    • As a main economic hub for the province of Québec Montréal contributes a sizeable part of the country’s GDP (C$118.7 billion of Quebec’s C$340.7 billion GDP as of 2018).
    • The city is rapidly expanding with openings in the burgeoning software and IT sectors for overseas workers with the requisite skillset

Moving to Canada for work can be a truly life-affirming decision with a wealth of opportunities in a multitude of different industries.

The Canadian economy is principally dominated by the service industry which employs about three quarters of Canadians. Of which several new jobs have recently been created in Montréal.

Other major working sectors include the city’s booming film industry, banking and finance, nano and environmental technologies sector, life sciences and health sector. The manufacturing industry is also experiencing labour shortages and looking for skilled workers further afield.

The city is also one of the largest aerospace centres in North America, employing over 40,000 people in Quebec’s aerospace industry.

Starting a new job in Canada can be tricky for first timers who must bring themselves up to speed on ever changing tax laws and the obligations to the federal government. Thankfully there’s lots of information online and lots of British expats who have trodden the path before and can offer advice.

In a multi-cultural working environment, you will have a distinct advantage if you can speak both French and English.

If, however you do not speak fluent French there is plenty of opportunity to learn through immersion programmes and the city is very welcoming to newcomers.

Other sectors to search for work are within the city’s booming film industry, banking and finances, its cutting-edge nanotechnology sector, or environmental technologies, life sciences and health technologies.

    Schools

    • Montreal has the highest concentration of post-secondary students of all major cities in North America.
    • The education system within Québec is overseen by the Ministry of Education, Recreation and Sports (Ministère de l’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport).
    • Education is compulsory in Canada up to the age 16 and most expat children are required to take schooling in French, with few exceptions.

The overall standard of education in Montreal, much like the rest of Canada is exceptional, although the system differs a little to others across North America.

Between high school (which ends at grade 11) and university, students must go through an additional school called CEGEP. CEGEPs offer pre-university (2-years) and technical (3-years) programs. In Montreal, seventeen CEGEPs offer courses in French and five in English.

Children who are able to speak both English and French from a young age will be at a distinct advantage over those who do not. Public education in Montreal is free for residents, but unless an expats’ child is fluent in French, it is not really an option.

English public schools are widely available, but children have to meet various requirements in order to be admitted. For example, they must have one parent who was educated in English in the Quebec province.

If your child has no prior tuition in French don’t fret for there are nine English language school boards in Montreal. Though that number may seem small, their catchment area is broad enough that there is an English language school within easy reach of most neighbourhoods.

The largest English school board in Montreal is the Lester B. Pearson School Board. It is made up of 62 elementary and secondary schools, all located just outside of the city centre.

Higher education is also well catered for and the best-known university in Montreal is McGill University. McGill consistently ranks in Canada’s top three and the world’s top 100 universities. It is one of Canada’s oldest schools and English is the adopted language of instruction.
