Why Move to Skegness?
Who doesn’t love a traditional English seaside town? A highly popular Lincolnshire seaside resort in Skegness you are faced with bracing air and all manner of entertainments. But what is it like to actually live here?
Affectionately known as Skeggie, the town grew from being an important port for coastal trade during the 14th Century. Skegness is situated in the East Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, on the Lincolnshire coast of the North Sea.
Early Skegness was both a fishing and farming village, but it was from the 18th Century when local gentry visited for their holidays and the arrival of the railways in 1973 that the towns fortune was transformed.
This new modern Skegness quickly became a popular destination for holidaymakers and day trippers from the East Midlands factory towns and became among the top beach holiday destinations in England. The first Butlin’s holiday resort was built here in 1936.
It is still a well-loved location but has a little more sophistication now however, the tourism industry remains very important for the local economy and employment.
Situated in the centre of the town in a transport hub, Skegness railway station is the terminus for the Grantham to Skegness line which runs hourly services from Nottingham via Grantham. Whilst getting around by car is via the A52 and A158 roads, connecting it with Boston and the East Midlands, and Lincoln respectively.
Among some of the areas recent redevelopments is the Lumley Shopping Plaza, home to over 30 new shops. There’s also the Hildreds Shopping Centre, Hardy’s Market and plenty of independents offering an all-round retail experience.
The towns Esplanade district is being upgraded too including the re-routing of traffic away from the planned new pedestrianised area. All good news for Skeggie’s residents as it will ease congestion in the summer months.
If you are searching for a home on the coast which offers a laid-back friendly way of life along with a location which has an average property price of just £182,000, good old Skeggie is worth investigating further.
Skegness Schools & Education
Like all areas, Skegness has a mix of very high performing establishments alongside several which unfortunately do not perform so well.
Notably, Lincolnshire is one of the few counties within the UK that still uses the eleven-plus to decide who may attend grammar school.
Residents are served by five state primary schools and a preparatory school, two state secondary schools (one of which is selective) along with several colleges.
Skegness Infant & Junior Schools and Beacon Primary Academy are all “good” reports Ofsted.
Skegness Grammar School and Skegness Academy provide secondary education for the town.
The only independent school is The Viking School catering for children aged between 2-11 years.
Older students can attend Skegness TEC (formerly Lincolnshire Regional College) which provides a huge range of GCSE, FE, and higher education courses.
Things to do in Skegness
As you would expect from a seaside destination there are miles of sandy beaches, a long amusement pier, plus all the usual entertainment one would associate with a holiday centre.

Along with some fantastic property prices, Skegness also offers a great choice of property styles.
Backing onto the promenade are leafy avenues filled with grand Victorian houses some of which have been modernised and re-sold as individual dwellings.
Being close to the ocean means that many homes have been purchased as holiday bold holes or second homes.
As such there is a good selection of mobile homes on the market starting at £9,500.
Property is amazingly cheap with two-bedroom flats being sold for £62,000. On the market currently is a three-bedroom flat at £80,000.
Those moving here with a family will doubtless require more space. Three-bedroom homes can be purchased from £155,000.
The desirable South Parade Road faces the sea and has some very imposing large properties along its length, many have balconies making the most of the panoramic views.
The average house price in the area is currently £211,763.
