    Why Move to Ferndown?

Within 100 years Ferndown has grown from a modest village on the heath into a thriving town which is now the second-largest inland town in Dorset in terms of population, after Dorchester.

The name, Ferndown, is believed to have been derived from the Anglo-Saxon word “fiergen”, which means wooded hill, and this area, on the edge of the beautiful New Forest, still boasts many woodlands.

Nicely located on the A31 trunk road, it offers quick access to many larger towns across the region such as Bournemouth, Poole, Wimborne, Winchester, Southampton and London. The nearest railway station is Branksome, 6.8 miles away and Ferndown is also only 4 miles from Bournemouth International Airport.

Ferndown is well served with a wide selection of high street names and superstores within its own modern shopping complex, while in Ferndown centre you will find independent shops such as a butcher, greengrocer and bakery. For a more comprehensive shop, the bustling town of Bournemouth is just over 8 miles away, 25 minutes by car.

Blessed by a selection of open spaces, Ferndown offers the chance to enjoy large areas of woodland and heathland including Holt Heath and Slop Bog with designated walking trails ideal for cycling, jogging or just a leisurely walk with the dog.

Also popular with residents are Ferndown’s playing fields and its sports centre which has a swimming pool and squash courts. This is also an area popular with golfers, and there are four to choose from.

Much of Ferndown’s local economy relies on its two big industrial estates; Ferndown and Uddens Industrial Estates, together they form the largest industrial area in East Dorset and are home to a wide range of both small and large businesses. A diverse range of industries are represented covering business services, manufacturing, retail and many more.
