Leisure if Moving to Knightsbridge
You cannot visit Knightsbridge without some retail therapy in one of the world’s most famous upmarket department stores – Harrods. This store sells everything. Spread over a 5 acre site with one million square feet of selling space, it is the biggest department store in Europe. It is visited by people from all over the world. The Christmas department is renowned. The Christmas shop window displays are absolutely stunning. The history of the beginnings of the store is fascinating. The founder of Harrods was Charles Henry Harrod, he first established his business in 1824, aged 25.
The business was located south of the River Thames in Southwark. The store changed names and moved premises several times, then in 1851 Mr Harrod took over a small shop in Brompton, on the site of the current store where he worked hard to build the business into a thriving retail operation selling medicines, perfumes, stationery, fruits and vegetables and rapidly expanded. Sadly in 1883 the store burnt to the ground and a new building was erected on the site.
It has had many famous customers such as Charlie Chaplain and Laurence Olivier. Finally the department store was purchased by the Fayed brothers in 1985. It is a great way to spend a few hours wandering around this beautiful store, well worth a visit.
