    Why Move to Berkhamsted

Berkhamsted is a quaint market town nestled in the home county of Hertfordshire, to the northwest of London. The town and the adjoining village of Northchurch are together encircled by countryside, much of it in the Chiltern Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

Berkhamsted has its fair share of interesting historical events. Following the 1066 Battle of Hastings, the Anglo-Saxon leadership surrendered to William the Conqueror at Berkhamsted. Following this event Berkhamsted Castle has been home to royals and historical figures including Geoffrey Chaucer and Henry II.

20th Century Berkhamsted has evolved into an affluent commuter town. It has been subject to much expansion after the canal and the railway were built in the 1900’s.

London is just 45 minutes by rail and the M25 is only a 10-minute drive away. The area has become increasingly popular as a place of residence for ex-Londoners who are looking for that special place that offers more space, cheaper property prices, and quick commuting times.

The busy high street is the hub of the town where you will find that there are plenty of modern shops alongside older more eclectic independents. The wide High Street is not only user-friendly but also an attractive place to shop.

The high street runs parallel with Grand Union Canal and offers an array of restaurants and cafés side-by-side with beautiful river walks, picnic spots, and canal-side pubs and bistros. For those who can afford to live here, it does provide a “have-it-all” kind of lifestyle along with excellent connectivity.

    Schools & Education

Naturally, you will find some excellent schools within Berkhamsted, both state and private schools are available making the town ideal for families.

Younger children in the 3–11-year age group have a choice of 9 schools within a two-mile radius of the town.

7 schools have been given the rating of “good” by Ofsted and the remaining two; Victoria Church of England Infant & Nursery School and St Thomas More Roman Catholic Voluntary Aided Primary School are deemed “outstanding”.

The local secondary school, Ashlyns, caters for older children as well as providing a sixth form.

Ofsted inspected the school in 2018. Among the many other positive remarks, it said that “there is an industrious, purposeful and productive atmosphere in all lessons. Pupils work diligently, reflectively and with enthusiasm”.

Places at the hugely popular Chesham Grammar School (‘outstanding’), over the border in Buckinghamshire, are in great demand. Entry is via the 11+ exam.

Berkhamsted Leisure Centre provides residents with excellent facilities; a large indoor multi-purpose sports hall, squash courts, swimming pool, an outdoor all-weather pitch, and a recently refurbished, 75-station gym. After all your hard work, you can also relax and unwind in the sauna!

Berkhamsted Castle was built to obtain control of a key route between London and the Midlands during the Norman conquest of England in the 11th century. The remains are carefully maintained by English Heritage. It has important associations with the family of William the Conqueror and, later, with Thomas a Becket.
