Why move to Knaresborough?

Knaresborough is a stunning market town, based on the River Nidd in the Borough of Harrogate. The town itself is picturesque with a wealth of historic buildings, cobbled streets and stunning views.

The town can be traced back to the eleventh century, where it was recorded in the Doomsday Book of 1189. Given the age of the town, it comes as no surprise that Knaresborough has a wealth of historical attractions such as the stunning viaduct, Knaresborough Castle and Mother Shipton’s Cave. There is an ancient well, referred to locally as the Petrifying well, the waters of which were once believed to hold healing properties.

Connections

Knaresborough has excellent commuter links. There are regular trains to both Leeds and York. By car Knaresborough is equally well connected, being just four miles from the A1. By car, York and Leeds can both be reached in under an hour and Manchester in just over an hour and a half. For those wishing to travel further afield, Leeds Bradford Airport is under an hours drive away, and has regular international flights.

Schools

The local comprehensive school, King James’s has received high praise from Ofsted, which said, “All groups of students make the most of their opportunities in this vibrant school”. Primary Schools in the area are also of a good quality.

Leisure

There’s a good mix of activities in the town, there is a yearly arts festival which is highly acclaimed. The town also celebrates a number of more eccentric traditions, such as the yearly bed race, a spectacle, which sees teams racing through the cobbled passages of the historic town.

Knaresborough Castle is definitely worth a visit, and the guides are very informative. Those with a sweet tooth should be sure to check out McQueens coffee shop, which is famous locally for its mouth-watering cakes and pastries.

Property

Average house prices in the area are relatively low; the average property is priced at £264,000. Flats in the area can be picked up for as little as £157, 00, whereas a detached family home can be expected to set the buyer back an average of £420,500. Top locations are Ashwood Villas.
