Moving to the USA

Are you considering moving to the USA and need a reliable removals company to transport your goods? As founder members of BAR, FIDI & OMNI, White & Company have been providing a full removals and storage service to the USA for the past eighty years. Whether it be from London to Los Angeles, or Newcastle to New York, White & Company can provide a full move from the UK to the USA.

The surveyor will need to conduct a home survey to ascertain the volume of effects being shipped. This involves him/her walking through the property room by room noting what items are to be exported and recording it on his electronic tablet.

White & Company has storage facilities at 19 storage locations throughout the UK all providing secure containerised storage in personal dedicated storage containers.

When the client has accepted the quoted price and a move date has been secured, the vehicle and removal team will arrive at residence. The removal team will proceed to export pack and wrap all items being shipped in special breathable bubble wrap.

Upon arrival at your local depot, all effects are transferred to the export warehouse to await loading into a 20ft or 40ft container. The container is booked with the shipping line onto the first available vessel destined to the closest port of entry to your final destination.

Why move to the USA?

As a country founded by immigrants, the national anthem proudly proclaims the USA as ‘the land of the free and the home of the brave’. It will perhaps come as no surprise to find therefore that the USA continues to be one of the most popular expat destinations in the world for those in search of the ‘American Dream’ of greater economic opportunities and a better life for their family.

Despite a global economic recession, the country continues to be the world’s largest economy by GDP and Americans continue to have the highest average household and employee income among developed nations.

The sheer size of the nation (larger than all the EU nations combined) means that climate, communities and living standards can vary drastically in the US depending on which State you are in. This increased size also tends to mean property sizes are generally far bigger in the States and far cheaper compared with most developed nations in Europe.

Integration into American society is said to be easier for Brits thanks, in part, to shared history and social values. However, there are some important differences be aware of. Religion and patriotism play a massive part in American society for one. Brits also struggle to comprehend the defence of the controversial second amendment (the right to bear arms).

The mix between high educational fees and the absence of universal health coverage is also unsettling for many. However, for those looking for a wealth of new opportunities, independence and an entrepreneurial spirit, the USA continues to entice expats from around the world.

Healthcare For The USA

One of the biggest shocks for British expats moving to the USA is the absence of universal medical care in the US. Unless your employer, as part of your relocation, pays for healthcare you will be expected to pay out for coverage for you and your family.

There are state-funded assistance programmes in place — Medicare and Medicaid — for the disabled, poor and young. However, most will have to pay out for their own coverage and medical bills are often very expensive.

Working and living in the USA

Since the tragic events of 9/11, changes to US police have resulted in far more selective immigration regulations, making obtaining a visa to work in the country far harder than before.

If you want to work in the US you can apply for several types of visa, including:
• H1-B non-immigrant visa — suitable for skilled, educated people working for a sponsoring employer in specific occupations such as maths, engineering, law or medicine
• H-2B — designed for temporary non-agricultural workers and available for foreign workers doing seasonal work where there is a shortage of local workers
• J-1 Visa Exchange Visitor Program — aimed at people looking to study, teach or carry out research

The ‘green card’ (I-551) is the most desired visa and grants permanent residency. You can obtain a green card through a job or job offer, provided there aren’t enough US workers who can do the job. There is also the annual green card lottery where each year 55,000 people win permanent residence.

Working in the USA

As the ‘American Dream’ suggest, Americans value hard work and people often work up to 40 hours per week with annual leave as low as two weeks in certain jobs.

The job market suffered during the recession and a number of key industries, including the manufacturing and factory industries in the so-called ‘rust belt’ of the USA have continued to be adversely affected.

However, unemployment is falling and opportunities are becoming available once again. Most financial jobs tend to be stationed on the East Coast cities, such as New York and Boston. Whereas, innovative technology start-ups, such as those in the famous Silicon Valley of California, are found on the West Coast cities in places like Los Angeles and Seattle.

Other areas where the USA job market is in need of workers, as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, are nursing, accountancy, software development, retail and mechanics.

As a general guide you will find property prices are influenced by location and demand with your choice of location influenced by your place of work. Rental and property prices are higher in major cities such as New York, Chicago and L.A.

Local agents will be the best place to start. The process of buying any type of property or land in the USA is strictly regulated. The services of certain professionals are required for the process. The local estate agent should be able to give an estimation of all fees and the property charges the buyer will be responsible for when they become the owner.

You can expect to pay US$ 10,250.00 per square metre for an apartment in the New York City suburbs. A similar property in Texas would cost US$ 2,400.00 per square metre.

The US boasts some of the most successful educational institutes in the world. The Ivy League institutions of Yale and Harvard (comparable to Oxford and Cambridge in the UK) are two of the most prestigious and well-regarded universities in the world. Obtaining a place is highly competitive, not to mention incredibly expensive, unless a place is awarded through scholarship.

There are a large number of good local public schools for English speaking expats to send their children. These schools are free and it gives expat children the opportunity to have more interaction with children in the local neighbourhood. Competition for places is fierce however and is usually determined according to geographic location.

There are also a number of international schools and colleges that offer a very good education for all. Students at international schools in the USA can be taught in English and a foreign language and can follow the curriculum back home.

However, good international schools can often have long waiting lists, so it is wise to apply well in advance. They are also expensive again —£14,000 per year on average.
