Why move to Winchester?

Winchester is a very pretty, and wonderfully Christmassy town, with an excellent Christmas market.  It has heaps of olde worlde charm, quaint buildings, winding alleys and cobbled lanes.  The city is famous for its legendary Arthurian round table, which has been housed in the medieval Great Hall for more than 700 years. It has a world famous cathedral, which is also definitely worth a visit.

It has a fabulous four trains an hour to London Waterloo, which takes about 70 minutes, so it’s just about commutable.  Trains also run to Southampton taking about 20 minutes and half hourly trains running north to Birmingham and Oxford.  By road you have the M3.

The local schools are all very good, both St Peter’s Catholic and St Faiths CofE are “outstanding”.  Kings secondary school is “exceptional”, not to mention the College!

The Black Rat is definitely worth a try, it has a Mitchelin star, boast a choice of 80 wines on its list and serves a very fine roast breast of guinea fowl.  The hotel du Van is always a safe bet and does a very good steak.  If shopping is your thing, then The Brooks shopping Centre is excellent.

Not the cheapest city, average house prices are £386,000.  Even small terraced cottages sell for around £364,000, if you’re after something bigger, you can expect to pay at least £630,000 for a family detached house.  The poshest area is St Cross; Fulflood is a good area for a villagey feel with plenty of Victorian housing.
