    Why Move to Hertford?

Hertford has been the county town of Hertfordshire since Saxon times when it was governed by the king’s reeves (a senior official with local responsibilities under the Crown).

The name is actually Anglo Saxon and means “the ford frequented by harts or stags”.
Modern Hertford is seen as an affluent up and coming location boasting low crime rates, high employment, and above-average educational achievements.

Travel connections are very good, and for those commuting into London, it is a 40-minute train journey direct into St. Pancras station. With its pretty Victorian terraced streets, outstanding schools, independent businesses and a thriving café and shopping culture, it is fast becoming a popular destination to live, work and raise a family.

A packed local calendar of festivals means you’ll rarely be left with nothing to do. In recent years Hertford has become something of a social mecca for all age groups, drawing people from miles around.

The town is surrounded by green belt and offers miles of unspoilt woods and hills, ideal for a host of outdoorsy activities. There is also plenty of riverside action as Hertford sits at the confluence of four river valleys: the Rib, Beane and Mimram join the River Lea at Hertford to flow east and then south toward the Thames.

Ancient folk lore says that somewhere amid the towns network of subterranean tunnels the Holy Grail is hidden! Who knew! Buyers are more than willing to pay the high cost of property to live in such a well-heeled, sedate, and historically attractive location with the bonus of some fantastic amenities thrown in.

    Hertford Schools & Education

As befits an affluent town, Hertford has a good many high performing schools.
Hertfordshire County Council is a useful place to start your search for an appropriate school for your child. For a comprehensive guide to schools in Hertford visit their web site:

There are plenty of primary schools to choose from in Hertford, including Abel Smith School, which was rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted at its last inspection.

Richard Hale School and The Sele School are both Ofsted graded ‘good’ secondaries, while Simon Balle All-Through School is ‘outstanding’, it teaches children from primary right through to sixth form.

Private schools include St. Joseph’s in the Park, Duncombe School, (a preparatory school in Bengeo) and Haileybury College in Hertford Heath.

    Things to do in Hertford

One of the things Hertford does best is history.

One of the most famous landmarks in the town is the Grade I listed Hertford Castle which sits in particularly beautiful grounds by the River Lea. Elizabeth I was a regular visitor.

Only the gatehouse remains of the original Norman building, which is now a popular wedding and corporate hire venue.

Hertford Museum is a great place to explore and discover the story of the town through its remarkable collection of archaeological, social, and historical exhibits.

For a cultural fix, Hertford Theatre has a year-round programme of touring productions while its cinema shows the latest mainstream and independent releases.

Hartham Common is a large green space just north of the town, mostly surrounded by water. It is a well-used area great for walking, cycling and popular with joggers.

Several popular parks also offer plenty of space for everyone to enjoy the outdoors among them are the Leavesden Country Park, Cassiobury Park and Verulamium Park.

Hartham Leisure Centre is a venue for all, where you can enjoy its gym, swimming pool, exercise classes, tennis court and football pitches. It offers a whole range of activities and opportunities to join local clubs and meet new people. (Hertford Lawn Tennis Club and Herts Canoe Club are always on the lookout for new members).

    Hertford Property

Naturally, being such a highly desirable town pushes up Hertford’s property prices way above the national average.

Often regarded as one of the most desirable in the UK in which to live, much of the town centre is a conservation area.

An eclectic mix of property awaits buyers, with plenty of choice for families, professional couples, and retirees. From new build flats, through to traditional Victorian terraced houses.

The town centre still has its medieval layout along with many timber-framed buildings hidden under later frontages, particularly along St Andrew Street and the riverside area of the town where pretty terraces enjoy stunning views along the River Lea.

The average property price in Hertford is currently £524,498 with the average price actually paid a bit less and standing at £494,374.

Although statistics indicate a drop in the value of homes in the area by 0.68% over the past year investing in a home here still makes financial sense as overall homes have doubled in price over the past 10 years.

In terms of property types, flats in Hertford sold for an average of £292,181 and terraced houses for £436,480. This is according to the current Zoopla estimates November 2021.
