About Mildenhall & Good Moves Mildenhall

This small market town is situated in the county of Suffolk and has a population of approximately 11,000. The town has very close links with the air force. The large Royal Air Force base, RAF Mildenhall, as well as RAF Lakenheath, are located north of the town. The town stands on the River Lark and on the edge of the Fens, conveniently placed close to Bury St Edmunds, Lakenheath, Brandon, Lavenham and Newmarket – making it ideally located for visitors who wish to visit other villages and historical towns in the north-west of Suffolk.

The town was given its Royal Market Charter in 1412. A 15th century Market Cross and town pump were erected to commemorate the importance of the market, which still takes place every Friday.

Interestingly, in 1943, one of Mildenhall’s claims to fame was the unearthing of the Mildenhall Treasure! A collection of exquisite examples of Roman silversmith work. Believed to have been buried in the 4th Century, it was uncovered by Gordon Butcher, a Suffolk ploughman. Not knowing the significance of the find he gave them to a friend for “safe keeping”. The friend urged Mr. Butcher to hand the treasure into the authorities. Consequently, the discovery was made public in 1946. The hoard was acquired by the British Museum in London. It is now among one of the top ten best British archaeological finds.
