Forres is an attractive and blooming town on the Moray coastline, around 30 miles north east of the Highland Capital of Inverness. An area of outstanding natural beauty, Forres has been the winner of the Scotland in Bloom award, run in partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society, on numerous occasions and boasts some impressive parks and classic castles.
A Royal Burgh since 1140, Forres is one of the oldest towns in Scotland. With three beaches to choose from, seascapes populated by bottle-nosed dolphins, and a micro-climate that’s the driest in Scotland, Forres holds broad appeal. Whether it be salmon fishing in the River Findhorn, enjoying a spot of golf at one of the championship courses in nearby Nairn, or taking a walk in the rolling hills of the countryside, Forres prides itself on its more relaxed approach to life.
In recent times, Forres has shown renewed promise as the area’s principle market town, providing various retail opportunities for boutique outlets and independent craft shops. Reports from Police Scotland also highlight Forres as one of the safest places to live in Scotland.
Forres enjoys very good travel connections for those wishing to commute. Situated on the A96 trunk route connecting it to the cities of Aberdeen and Inverness. Elgin, the biggest city in the region is roughly 20 minutes’ drive east. The major employment of hub of Inverness is 40 minutes away by car and is also linked by rail via the Inverness to Aberdeen Railway line.
The population of Forres is comparatively small at around 12,000 and employment opportunities are few and far between. There is however some opportunities and current demand is for those with skills in teaching, nursing, engineering and social care.
The larger town of Inverness is a growth area unlocking a whole host of other employment opportunities in the retail, construction, public administration, IT services sectors. Aberdeen is Scotland’s most populous city and is a 1 hour and 40 minutes train journey from Forres and also offers further job prospects in Scotland’s primary industries of forestry, agriculture and fisheries.
Education in Scotland is overseen by the Scottish Government and has a history of universal provision of public education. It is worth noting however that the Scottish education system is distinctly different from other countries in the United Kingdom, notably England.
Fortrose Academy, Dornoch Academy and Millburn Academy are three of the best schools in the area and all have attained some impressive performance statistics.
Forres does not have its own university however, the closest two would be The Robert Gordon University and University of Aberdeen.
