First recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086, Lancaster is an ancient settlement and city in the North of England. Its skyline is dominated by castles, churches and hills, but don’t let its rugged medieval exterior fool you, it is far from a sleeping city.
The modernisation of two university campuses (Lancaster and Cumbria) have given the area a more cosmopolitan character and injected fresh life. From boutique shops to the beautiful Morecambe Bay, a favourite holiday destination for many years, Lancaster combines all the quirks and charms of the old town with the ingenuity of a modern European city.
Lancaster enjoys a very healthy arts scene with lots of live music venues and literary festivals. As you would imagine, because of its universities, Lancaster’s nightlife buzzes with contemporary theatre, film, and a wide array of food and drink options, catering to all palettes.
Primarily a service-oriented city, a good proportion of Lancaster’s population is employed in the wholesale, retail, manufacturing and education sectors. As you would expect, nearby areas such as Blackpool, employ heavily in the accommodation and food service businesses.
In recent years, a high technology sector has emerged, due to large scale investment from IT Communications companies in the city. Regular train services to major northern cities such as Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds also make Lancaster a well-connected city and vibrant transport hub for young professionals, as well as families.
Close to the sea, lakes and the Yorkshire dales, Lancaster has lots to offer in terms of outdoor living. There are great cycle paths along to the Crook O’Lune in one direction and Glasson Dock to another, along with an old rail track straight to the Morecambe seafront.
Of course, no trip to Lancaster is complete without a trip to one of its spooky castles, to explore some of its haunted and eerie past, and then perhaps afterwards to one of the cities many tea rooms for a refreshing snack and beverage.
