    Why Live in Canvey Island?

Canvey Island is a reclaimed island in the Thames estuary in Essex but separated from the mainland by a network of creeks. During the Victorian era Canvey became a popular seaside resort to visit with many affluent London families visiting the town, which sits below sea level, to take in the ‘fresh air’. Traditionally thought of as a small and insular community, a shift in mindset is emerging with many different pockets of communities now calling the island home alongside locals.

The town’s mantlepiece, the Labworth café is a listed building in the form of a modern pavilion. Designed by the same architect who built the Sydney Harbour Bridge it sits on the coast, offering panoramic estuary views and fine international cuisine.

A £50 million regeneration scheme will see the building of more shopping facilities with private developers having already announced a new retail park to be built at Roscommon Way with leases assigned to many high-street retailers.

Despite being in a remote part of Essex the town enjoys reasonably good transport links with the capital and neighbouring Essex towns. The town itself has an unemployment rate of just 2.2% but many residents opt to commute to London for work with nearby Benfleet train station running regular services to London’s Fenchurch Street which take around 45 minutes.

Far away enough to have a great sense of local community but close enough to enjoy the bright lights of the big city, living in Canvey Island is fast becoming a fashionable choice for young families and professionals alike. Soaring London rents and upsurges in house prices across Essex look set to see the trend of people moving to Canvey Island continuing.

Things to Do in Canvey Island

Before the building of sea defences, shepherds and sheep were almost the only inhabitants of the island! In more recent years all the members of the band Dr Feelgood lived on Canvey and an annual ‘Dr Feelgood’ weekend is held each year during the month of November.

The oldest pub on the island is the Lobster Smack Inn by the sea wall, which claims a licence dating from the time of Elizabeth I and was even mentioned in Charles Dicken’s novel ‘Great Expectations’. It was once a destination for organised bare-knuckle fights but thankfully things are a bit more civilised now as it provides an idyllic setting on the coast for afternoon tea or a pub quiz.

Of course, being a seaside town, one of the biggest attractions on the island is the beach itself. It features a children’s tidal swimming pool, old fish and chip shops and bars where you can relax and sit on the beach and enjoy the views of the Kent coast.
