    Why Move to Hemel Hempstead?

Classed as a new town in Hertfordshire, Hemel Hempstead is part of the Greater London Urban Area.

The town has a surprising earlier history. Roman remains and artefacts have been found across the district and in 1086, the then named Hamelamestede was mentioned in the Domesday Book.

By 1539 the small settlement was upgraded, and King Henry VIII awarded the town a royal charter thus giving it permission to hold a market. Hemel has been expanding ever since.
Although Hemel Hempstead’s citizens, which now number around 100,000, live in a very different place the market continues to be held on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays between 8am and 4pm.

The two very distinct centres of the town are being united and enhanced thanks to an exciting £30m regeneration plan. The subtle updates have meant the conservation area’s character has been preserved while attracting new businesses, such as shops and cafés.
The council is currently working on other enhancements, further stimulating interest and its economy.

Many locals choose to travel into the capital to work; London is 24 miles away, accessed by road via the M1 and M25. By rail, the West Coast Main Line offers frequent services between London Euston and the Midlands as well as Watford, Kensington, Milton Keynes, and Northampton.

Heathrow airport is just a short journey of 35 minutes by train or 24 miles and 30 minutes by car.

There are some very pretty natural areas to explore. Gadebridge Park is the largest green space nearest to the town whilst the Grand Union Canal, a popular route for narrowboat pleasure craft cuts through Hemel Hempstead.

The old High Street has plenty of antique shops and a range of other businesses. The Marlowes Shopping Centre is in the heart of the town and is complemented by national stores at the new Riverside development.

When it comes to property, Hemel Hempstead is more affordable than its neighbours St Albans and Kings Langley.

However, being situated in the Greater London Urban Area does mean that homes do cost more than the UK average. The average property is currently £414,238 compared to London’s average price paid of £707,466.

With so much variety for property seekers coupled with a nice neighbourly feel, good shops and schools and a range of outdoor amenities everything you need is here.

    Hemel Hempstead Schools & Education

The town has always provided a good selection of schools. Following its rapid expansion and being one of the first wave of new towns in 1947, a large number of schools were built to deal with the influx of families.

Many schools have now been amalgamated and Hemel now offers primary education at seven schools, all of which have been judged as “good” by Ofsted.

For secondary school age school children, good choices include John F Kennedy Catholic and the Hemel Hempstead School both “good” says Ofsted.

Westbrook Hay Prep School and Lockers Park School are the closest two private institutions.

For further education students travel to nearby West Herts College. The college offers a range of career focused full-time courses, apprenticeships, Degrees and HNDs. Plus, support with English and maths and work placements to help students succeed at work or at university.

Things to do in Hemel Hempstead

Hemel offers plenty of social activities and lots of space in which to enjoy them.
In 1798 the construction of the Grand Junction Canal reached Hemel Hempstead. Now part of the Grand Union Canal, maintained by the Canal & River Trust not only is it a well-liked place for locals but people from far and wide take their holidays on its well-kept waterways.

One of the best loved landmarks (especially for children) is the 24-jet fountain. Located in the centre of New Town Square, it changes from producing mere bubbles to two-metre-high spouts. The water forms patterns synchronised to lights and music.

Gadebridge Park sits on the northern edges of Hemel Hempstead. Divided into two main areas, separated by the Leighton Buzzard Road, it covers a total area of about 32 hectares. You will find lots to do here. Cycling, an outdoor fitness area, a play area for smaller children and a skate park.

Little Hay Golf Complex features an 18-hole golf course, pitch and putt and a driving range. Its Par3 Suite bar and restaurant look out over the beautiful grounds of the Little Hay countryside, just the spot to stop and enjoy lunch.

Jarmans Park retail and leisure complex includes a cinema and sports facilities. The town has an antiques market on Wednesdays and a general market from Thursday to Saturday.
