Hanbury Castle is such an interesting place to visit. Built and located on a prominent vantage point in 1100 AD. In the years shortly after the Norman invasion of 1066, William the Conqueror is believed to have ordered defences to be built against a still hostile and rebellious native community.
It was modernised and rebuilt over hundreds of years. It was left to ruin in the 17th Century but again revived in 1813. Archaeological excavations have slowly revealed many of its past secrets. With a visitor’s centre and a scale model to show how the castle would have looked in its heyday, a café and gift shop, it’s a really nice way to spend a few hours.
