    Why Move to Barrow-in-Furness?

Barrow-in-Furness is a town and seaport in the county of Cumbria. It is bordered with Morecambe Bay, the Duddon Estuary and the Irish Sea, 49 miles from Lancaster. Based at the tip of the Furness peninsula, the town has a population of around 69,000 in the wider borough. This makes it the 2nd biggest urban area in Cumbria after Carlisle.

Said to be one of the best-kept secrets in Britain, Barrow is a Victorian town with a proud heritage of innovation. The region is surrounded by beautiful beaches and inspiring scenery. It is a destination of surprises which lies 20 minutes from the stunning Lake District. Barrow has been referred to as a “gateway to the lakes.”

Barrow’s location and the availability of steel meant it developed into a significant producer of naval vessels. The town’s former steel industry is still evident today. Not only does it have an extensive dockland and ship-building bay, it also has rows of tightly knit terraces that once housed steel workers.

Much re-generation has taken place over the past few years and now Barrow is seen as the Lake District’s Premier Shopping Town, where major high street names mingle with local specialist shops in the spacious pedestrianised town centre. Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays are the local market days where over 100 stalls set up shop.

With high quality housing at good prices, coast or countryside close by, plenty of shopping and entertainment possibilities along with a range of employment opportunities, Barrow-in-Furness has it all!

    Barrow-in-Furness Schools & Education

Education in the state-funded sector includes fifteen primary schools, five infant schools, five junior schools and many nurseries.

Local children filter into three secondary schools in the town: Furness Academy, St. Bernard’s Catholic High School and Walney School.

Further education is catered for by one college, Furness College. It provides a wide range of A levels, vocational education and skills training to over 16s. Technical and professional qualifications are delivered at the Channelside campus, with A’ levels delivered at the Rating Lane campus.

Although there is not a university close to the town, Furness College also offers several higher apprenticeships, foundation degrees, Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes accredited by the University of Cumbria, University of Lancaster and the University of Central Lancashire.

The coastline boasts two internationally renowned nature reserves. The South Walney reserve is home to 60,000 birds, whilst the North Walney Nature reserve protects the rare Natterjack toad and the Walney geranium.

Hollywood Park is an exciting new leisure facility, with lots of restaurants and shops, a cinema, health club and Cumbria’s only 10 pin bowling complex. The site also has a fitness suite and swimming pool which features a wave machine, flume and water cannons.

A day outdoors at Barrow Park, set in 45 acres is not to be missed. It is incredibly beautiful and has a surprising number of things to do including enjoying some live music at the bandstand, boating on the lake and a miniature steam train ride.
