Are You Moving to Cyprus & Looking For A Reliable Removals Company?

Are you thinking of moving to Cyprus? The country has a unique Mediterranean feel with many cultural influences, especially following the Turkish invasion.  The ratio of Greek to Turkish Cypriots is roughly four to one, which shows itself in the land occupied by the Turks in the north and the Greek Cypriot’s in the south. Whilst infrastructure in Cyprus has improved considerably over the past years, expats should remember that it still operates in a very relaxed way.  The local Cypriot dialect is Greek and is most widely spoken on the island; however, English is also spoken and understood by many locals, especially the younger generation.  It is also used on signage, making getting around Cyprus more manageable for non-Greek residents.

Property prices if you are thinking of moving to Cyprus

The trend recently has been for expats moving to Cyprus to buy a property, rather than renting.  Properties in the ‘Greek South’ tend to be newer and more expensive than in the ‘Turkish North’.  That said, property across the whole island is cheaper than in most Western and Northern European states. As a comparison, you can expect to pay Euros 1142 (£1011) per square metre to purchase a one bedroomed apartment on the outskirts of town. If you are going to rent, the average monthly cost on the outskirts of town is Euros 315 (£278) . Much cheaper than a similar property in the UK.  There are plenty of English speaking estate agents who can assist you with the renting and buying process. The following site has a selection of properties:

Schools if moving to Cyprus

The standard of Cypriot state schools is equivalent to private school standards in the UK. The system is different to that of the UK whereby exams only contribute to 25% of the overall mark with 75% coming from class work gained throughout the school year. Arguably a fairer measure of a child’s ability when they reach 16. The majority of Cypriots receive their higher education at Greek, British, Turkish, other European and North American universities. The majority of expats will choose an international school, especially if they only plan to stay in Cyprus for a few years. This option eliminates any concerns surrounding the language barrier.  The following site will help you find a suitable international school: Cyprus Education

Most expats will choose to drive a car, rather than rely on public transport.  The main cities have buses and taxis but there is no operational railway service and public transport between towns isn’t always very accessible.
