    Why Move to Marlborough?

The traditional market town of Marlborough is situated in the northeast of Wiltshire.
Wiltshire’s most vibrant market town is packed with arcades, alleyways, coaching inns, half-timbered cottages, and a church at each end of its high street.

Occupying a picturesque area in the Kennet River valley between the slopes of the Marlborough Downs to the north with Savernake Forest to the south, Marlborough has heaps of rural charm and appeal. Despite the almost 1.30 – 2-hour commute, Marlborough has for some time been receiving the attention of southwest Londoners, eager to escape the city to a more rustic area. Closer to home, if you are looking for employment in the area, hundreds of IT and manufacturing groups are concentrated along the M4 corridor, such as Honda, Alcatel-Lucent, and Nokia.

The town is also within a good commuting distance of Newbury, Swindon, Reading, Bristol, and Heathrow. Being situated close to the M4 makes Marlborough remarkably well connected for such a rural market town.

An interesting place to call home, Marlborough offers the local population a unique blend of modern attractions and facilities alongside historical buildings and ancient myths. Another reason why so many people love the town is its unique offering of retailers.
A veritable retail hub, the main high street is lined by high-quality independent shops, perfect for browsing.

Although self-sufficient, the town is well placed for other retail centres including those of Swindon, Bath, Hungerford, and Newbury. There are plenty of attractions close by to keep everyone entertained. A big draw is the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which encompasses much of the countryside around Marlborough. Having so many positive attributes means that Marlborough has always and continues to be a popular area for those seeking solace from far busier urban communities located across the region.

    Marlborough Schools & Education

Although Marlborough is not a particularly large town, education standards are more than adequate.

There is a good choice of schools both state and on the west side of the town Marlborough College, an independent boarding school is another option.

Best state schools include Preshute Church of England Primary School and St John’s Marlborough mixed secondary school; both having been rated as “outstanding” by Ofsted.

There are no FE colleges within the town, however, there are plenty of highly regarded further education colleges serving the wider county of Wiltshire.

New College and Swindon College provide further education and higher education requirements, mainly for 16- to 21-year-olds.

Swindon College is one of the largest FE-HE colleges in southwestern England, situated at a purpose-built campus in North Star, Swindon, a journey of around 12 miles.

    Marlborough Property

Property prices are steep with the average home selling for £538,554.

Nevertheless, it is still much cheaper to buy in Marlborough when compared to central London’s average of £787,073.

There are currently 53 homes for sale in the town with the vast majority consisting of two and three-bedroomed properties.

The wonderful town centre with its half-timbered and thatched cottages is where some of the most desirable properties are located.

Incredibly, you can purchase a characterful Grade II two-bed cottage for around £200,000.

Further outside the town, there are some very attractive little villages which are also very popular with buyers.

Head to Mildenhall, Stitchcombe and Manton for a home that is located far enough out of the town to be semi-rural but not too far from Marlborough’s great amenities.
