A Place in the Sun Brittany – About Brittany
Moving to another country is a thrilling opportunity, but also one that requires dedication, plenty of organisation and time to research what is available. Thinking life will be one long holiday is a usual mistake. You’ll need to prepare yourself for the physical, psychological and financial factors of moving.
Brittany has many advantages; ease of access from England is a strong point in its favour. It has a number of historic sites such as Carnac, Concarneau and St Malo. There is also links with Arthurian legend in many of the Breton towns and villages.
Brittany also benefits from the proximity of the Gulf Stream, which is why the winters are milder and spring seem to arrive earlier. In summer the evenings are longer and in winter the climate is milder. The Bretons are very proud of their culture and almost every town and village has a Bagad (pipe band) and Dance Circle.
A Place in the Sun Brittany- Buying a Property in Brittany
Buying a property in Brittany is generally a straightforward and well-regulated process. Prices will depend very much on which area you choose. The larger towns will be much more expensive than more rural villages. One point to remember is the process becomes legally binding very quickly so it is wise not sign anything in a rush.
The cost to purchase a property in a larger town would be upwards of €4975.00 per square metre. This compares with the price of a similar sized property in a more rural village location, which would cost approximately €3,200.00 per square metre.
While Brits remain the biggest foreign buyers in Brittany, foreign home ownership figures are down. Non-resident foreign buyers snapped up 1% of properties that were sold last year, figures that have dropped considerably over the last five years. Due to the economic problems associated with Brexit, French mortgage rates also at an all-time low, there are some real bargains out there for property hunters searching for their ideal property at a great price.
