    Transport connections in Maidstone are excellent. There are trains twice hourly from Maidstone East station to London St Pancras and London Victoria.

    Trains also run to Ashford (twice hourly, taking 30 minutes). The M20 runs to the north of the town and will get you to Ashford in 30 minutes, Folkestone in 40 minutes and M25 in 30 minutes.

    The nearest airport is London Southend Airport, which is a drive of approximately 21 miles.

    As you would expect from a large town, there is a great choice of schools across the region. 23 primary schools feed into 15 secondary schools, with two special schools also in the area.

    Three stand outs, Roseacre Junior School, Oakwood Park Grammar and Maidstone Grammar School were all given ‘outstanding’ ratings at their last Ofsted inspections.

    Higher education provisions in the area are provided by Oakwood Park a regional campus of the University for the Creative Arts (formerly Kent Institute of Art & Design).

    The Turner Prize nominated artist Tracey Emin, fashion designer Karen Millen and television personality and artist Tony Hart all studied here.

    Things to Do in Maidstone

    Maidstone is a major English tourist attraction, oozing both historical and contemporary cultures which can be seen reflected in its wide array of cultural centres.

    There are pockets of Maidstone that hark back to the UK’s charming past; you’ll walk on cobbled streets and see the lovely historic buildings that line them.

    Shopping is what many people visit the town for. Its two flagship shopping centres Fremlin Walk boasting over 50 popular high-street shops, and The Mall, a covered shopping centre perfect for a rainy day.

    Maidstone’s thriving high street itself has a mix of boutique independents and well-known retailers. With regular farmers’ markets, all these options combine to provide retail heaven for shoppers.

    Other places of note to visit are include the Maidstone Museum. Housing an extensive collection of watercolour and oil paintings donated by Samuel and George Bentlif. The popular Queen’s Own Royal West Kent Regimental Museum is also located within the main building.

    Maidstone Leisure Centre offers the perfect family fun day out as well as a sports & fitness centre. The centre has undergone a major refurbishment and is now one of the best leisure attractions in Kent.

    Millennium River Park is almost 7 miles long and runs along the banks of the River Medway from Teston Country Park to The Malta Inn and The Kent Life Museum in Allington. It is a beautiful location and certainly worth a visit.

    Moat Park offers an abundance of children’s play areas, a BMX track, a skate park, model railway and sports facilities all on the 180 hectares of public space.
