    Known as the “Gateway to Europe”, living in Folkestone means travelling to Europe could not be easier. The seaport of Dover is only a 17-minute drive away where you can access the ferry terminal and sail to France, Belgium and Spain. Alternatively, you can be in France or travel onward to the rest of Europe by rail via the Eurotunnel in 30 minutes.

    By road the town lies 40 minutes from Canterbury, 20 from Ashford and an hour to the M25. Domestic train services also offer routes to other towns in the area and you can be in London St Pancras station in just under an hour.

    As well as its great transport links, the town is a perfect place to bring up a family. More and more young professionals from London and Surrey who are ready to start a family are choosing to put down roots in the town. As well as the mix of access to both country and sea, the area’s grammar schools are another huge attraction.

    There are certainly plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy in the town ad surrounding region. The North Downs Way and the Saxon Shore Way long-distance walking routes can be picked up in or near Folkestone and is a wonderful way to explore the region on foot.

    Folkestone Schools & Education

    With its excellent reputation for quality education, Folkestone offers a variety of choice good schools from nursery right through to University.

    Two of the best state primaries are St Eanswythe’s CofE and Sandgate. Both having been ranked as “outstanding” by Ofsted.

    Of the state funded secondaries, Folkestone academy fared well following its last inspection where it was a warded a rating of “good”.

    Folkestone also has two grammar schools, both of which consistently get excellent exam results: Harvey Grammar in Cheriton Road (boys ages 11 to 18) and Folkestone School for Girls (girls, ages 11 to 18) with some courses sharing in the sixth form; the former is judged “good”, the later “outstanding”.

    Private education is provided by Dover College in nearby Dover, it is an excellent private day and boarding school.

    For higher education, the University Centre Folkestone, specialises in the performing and visual arts, business and enterprise, opened in 2008 and is a joint venture between the Creative Foundation, Greenwich University and Canterbury Christ Church University

    Things to Do in Folkestone

    This quintessentially English coastal town is home to many tourist attractions and things to do, including spending time in its seafront amusement arcades and pavilions.

    The beaches in Folkestone are very good, clean and safe. Sunny Sands Beach is the most popular beach in the region. Located close to the centre of town and next to Folkestone Harbour with facilities close by including cafés, pubs, restaurants and shops.

    Overlooking the English Channel, the cliff top promenade offers stunning views out to sea and towards France.

    You can catch the historic Leas Lift down towards Lower Leas coastal park or the beach for a picnic or alternatively wander to Rocksalt for fresh fish and chips and stunning harbour views.

    Residents are kept entertained with a range of festivals, events, markets and shows which are held throughout the year. The Folkestone Sausage Festival, Tea Festival and Folkestone Festival Proms all draw thousands to the town.

    Other events which are well attended nearby include the Ashford Festival in the Park and Hawkinge Music Festival.
