White & Company Helps Bring Forres’s Cinema History Back to Life

White & Company is proud to have supported Glasgow School of Art student Natália Toralles dos Santos Braga in her mission to “rescue” the history of cinema in Forres.
Her exhibition, held on Sunday 10 August in the car park of our Forres branch, which was formerly the Picture House, celebrated the town’s rich film heritage with historic photographs, recorded memories, and even fresh popcorn.
Natália, who is studying for a master’s degree in Design Innovation and Future Heritage, was inspired by the original architecture still visible inside the former Picture House, including the projection screen, staircase, doors, and ceiling.
As part of her research, she explored how towns like Forres have kept the tradition of going to the cinema alive through groups such as Film Forres.
Speaking about the role White & Company played in her project, Natália said:
“They gave me a guided tour, showing me every corner of the place, as well as old photos and newspaper clippings. And of course, they allowed me to use the car park for the event, which was very significant.”
For White & Company, the project was about more than just opening our doors — it was about safeguarding a piece of local history. As a company with over 150 years of service, we understand the importance of preserving the traditions and heritage of the communities we work in.
By helping Natália share the story of Forres’s two cinemas — The Lyceum (1913–1927) and The Picture House (1927–1964) — we hope to keep the memories and spirit of these venues alive for future generations.
White & Company remains committed to supporting local heritage initiatives that celebrate the past while bringing communities together today.
