    Why move to Lowestoft?

Perched on the blustery cliffs of the Suffolk Coast, Lowestoft is Suffolk’s second largest town and the most easterly in the UK — which means it has the immense privilege of being the first to see sunrise!

The town is a firm favourite among holidaymakers, with award-winning Blue Flag beaches where you can ride horses, build sandcastles, and enjoy all the sights and smells of the Great British seaside.

There is no shortage of green spaces either. Lake Lothing runs through the middle of the town and contains Lowestoft Harbour which provides easy access via Oulton Broad and Oulton Dyke to the River Waveney and the Norfolk Broads.

There are also plenty of opportunities for shoppers, with many high street retailers having stores in this area. Some special shopping areas have been designated, including The Historic High Street and the Triangle Market Place to the north.

Not only is it a great place to visit but it’s also a great place to stay. There is a low demand for second homes in the area, compared with slightly more illustrious and secluded neighbours such as Southwold, which means housing is far more affordable.

Winding waterways, quirky cinemas and colourful beach huts all combine to make this a charming place to raise a family or simply get a foot on the property ladder.

Once you have relocated to your new home in Lowestoft, there is a whole host of important things you need to organise. Below is some practical information which may prove helpful.

    Lowestoft Schools & Education

Lowestoft has a number of primary schools, including four 11–16 high schools.

Whilst some of the best primary institutions include Carlton Colville, Poplars Community and Roman Hill.

The town has a total of four high schools, some of the best include East Point Academy and Benjamin Britten High School.

East Point Academy is one of Lowestoft’s top-performing high schools. In its 2022 Ofsted Assessment, the outcome was that East Point “continues to be a good school”

Post–16 education is provided at Lowestoft Sixth Form College, which opened in September 2011 as part of the school reorganisation, and Lowestoft College which provides a range of academic and vocational courses.

For more information on researching and finding schools and colleges in the Lowestoft area consult the School Guide.

    Things to Do in Lowestoft

Far from being just another dreary washed-up seaside town, there is all manner of things to see and do in Lowestoft, including two piers, a zoo, and even an award-winning theme park.

Lowestoft has a beautiful blue flag beach, making it a perfect day out for the family. Take a walk along the promenade and enjoy the views, pretty beach huts, the pier, miles of sand and traditional fish and chip shops.

Pakefield Riding School is a must visit which allows for riding horses along the beach (like something out of a Lloyds TV Ad!).

To the south of the town is the Africa Alive Wildlife Park. A wonderful family attraction packed with animals, educational experiences, activities and displays.

To the west, are the woodland walks of Carlton Marshes nature reserve. Run by the Suffolk Wildlife Trust and covering 1000 acres, it is a beautiful place to visit.

The town’s highly-rated Marina Theatre offers an excellent programme of West End shows and is home to the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Take a drive and enjoy the pretty villages and towns, which surround Lowestoft, such as Aldeburgh, Beccles, and Bungay.

The Suffolk Coast, including the Victorian seafront gardens, are the perfect place to explore come rain or shine. www.thesuffolkcoast.co.uk

Pay a visit to the Oulton Broad which offers year-round water sports, little cafes, and riverside restaurants, or for a serious case of wanderlust, venture further afield to the stunning Broads national park.

    Lowestoft Property

Since Lowestoft is the only seaside town in Suffolk to sit right on the doorstep of the Broads, you would be right to assume house prices were high.

The good news for those searching for a home in Lowestoft is, unlike some of its neighbours, properties are actually competitively priced.

It is still possible to buy a terraced home with 2 bedrooms for under £150,000 in Lowestoft.

Lowestoft has an assortment of properties on offer however, by far the most common type of housing available in the district is its Victorian terraced homes.

These terraces make up a little over 45 per cent of the housing stock. They are generally large, with big rooms and sizeable gardens.

With the demand for second homes being so low, locals can still afford to live here.

Of course, as with all coastal towns, it is the homes lining the seafront that receive the most attention. Even here, the costs are lower than you might expect.

Lowestoft is full of surprises when it comes to property.
