How to choose the right removals company

If you’ve ever tried to move home yourself you will be aware just how tough it can be. Each year thousands of people in the UK underestimate the time spent packing and moving belongings, not to mention the stress of carrying heavy furniture pieces.

Many movers look for cheap van hire or so called ‘Man in the Van’ solutions only to come unstuck when these services prove unfit or do not include something taken as staple.

When it comes to moving it is vitally important therefore that you choose the right removals company. But with so many on the market and each offering different policies and packages it can become overwhelming choosing between them all.

That’s why we’ve put together a quick guide to choosing a reliable removals company, including things to look for in a removals company, precautions to take and how to get an accurate removals quote.

Arrange a home survey

Your first point of call should be to arrange for a surveyor to call round personally at your home and undertake a survey. This gives you the opportunity to ask any questions and for the surveyor to assess any special considerations regarding access to the property or awkward items for attention.

It is important to consider that many removal companies are booked up weeks in advance, especially during the summer months. It is best to start looking for a removals company well before your completion date.

Your removals company should visit you free of charge. Typically, a surveyor will walk round each room calculating the amount of packaging materials required and the resources needed. Removal costs are usually based on the ‘total volume of effects’ so be honest about your possessions.

Ask for accreditation

Before you even ask about any services they provide you should assess whether the removals company is trustworthy and reliable.

An easy way to do this checking to see whether the removals company is a member of the British Association of Removers (BAR), or if moving internationally, FIDI & OMNI affiliated.

These organisations carry out regular audits and adhere to strict standards and regulations to maintain membership. Not only will they be more efficient, but should something go amiss, these organisations will have dispute resolution procedures in place to resolve complaints.

The logos for each of these organisations should be displayed clearly on the company web site, normally on the home or front page.

What services do they offer?

Once you’ve got the basic costs of your move settled now is a good time to start enquiring about any additional services you may require. For example, do you require an unpacking or cleaning service?

Perhaps you require storage facilities so that you can arrange to have some of your belongings delivered at a later stage.

Whatever your requirements make it clear face-to-face. Otherwise something you thought was included might not be. This can lead to extra costs or worse still, the company may have insufficient time and resource on the day to account for it.

Compare quotations

Once you have got a few quotations it is now time to choose the removals company you wish to go with. It’s tempting to go with the cheapest offer, but this is not always best. In fact, if they don’t provide a service which you later need this can push up the price.

Try to get at least three quotations. Arranging a survey with at least three different removals companies not only allows you to compare prices, but it also allows you to make an assessment about the company’s level of service.

When coming to a decision ask yourself some basic questions:

How interested are they in my move?

What questions did they ask me?

Did they seem knowledgeable?

What timeframe have they given me?

Can they carry out specific tasks such moving my grand piano or wrapping my prized antique?

What do their customers say?

When conducting your research on various removals company it is always advisable to see what other people have said about them. Were they friendly and courteous? Did they carry out the move as described? If something went wrong, were they able to put it right?

Most reputable removals companies will be signed up to Referenceline or Trustpilot and will post the latest reviews from their customers online. Be watchful of companies that only post entirely ‘super positive’ feedback or bogus reviews.

Enquire about insurance

Know where you stand should things go wrong and enquire about insurance.
Most removals companies operate a standard removals insurance and offer cover per item. It is always worth checking what you are covered for in the event of damage/loss and if need be, take out additional cover, either with the company or a separate provider.

Overseas moves

If you are moving overseas there will be additional considerations and questions to ask.

During the survey you should enquire about customs requirements, the marine or freight insurance they offer and any additional considerations you may have such as moving pets abroad.

A reliable overseas removals company should offer you export packing and wrapping and be able to clearly explain the shipping or freight process they have for your intended destination. As with domestic removals, just how courteous and knowledgeable they are should inform your decision.

General Information

Moving to a new country can take some getting used to. Local customs and characteristics of each country can be very different. Learning from those who have already made the transition into Austrian life will prove invaluable.

Each town and city will have an expat community. As well as gleaning lots of information about the cost of living, housing, neighbourhoods etc, it is a great opportunity for you to make new friends.

For some helpful tips and information on settling into life abroad, it is a good idea to visit some of the many expat forums online.
