    Why Move to Cambridge?

Most widely renowned for being home to Cambridge University, one of the most prestigious universities in the world.

The city of Cambridge itself is a bustling hub of activity which mixes history, culture, and innovation in equal measure.

Settlements have existed since prehistoric times, but today Cambridge is home to a vibrant community of families, young professionals and international students with excellent schools and first-class leisure facilities.

Just under an hour away from Kings Cross station in London, Cambridge is a popular commuter city of choice for those working in the city but wanting to escape to the cosy confines of the rural countryside.

Indeed, the university city has historically been a feeder of the brightest minds directly to the capital, but all that is starting to change.

Nicknamed the ‘Silicon Fen’ due to the more than 1,000 high-tech businesses based here, Cambridge has emerged as one of the fastest-growing, flexible job markets in the sector.

The high capacity for networking has made it easier than ever to find a business partner or investor and commercial rents are lower than the capital, making it easier for start-ups and small businesses to grow.

As you can imagine with a city boasting such a large student population, it is not all work and no play either.

There is no shortage of pubs, restaurants, nightclubs, and theatres to revel and play in.

The Strawberry Fair Music & Arts Festival and Midsummer Fairs are popular events held on Midsummer Common, as is the annual Cambridge Beer Festival.

Beautiful green open spaces combined with the river Cam make Cambridge a beautiful place to walk at any time of year, providing many opportunities to punt, picnic or swim.

On the flip side, property prices continue to rise and are not far off that of London.

A large and ever-increasing student population has also increased demand for affordable properties and so it might not be the best place for families looking to upscale.

The huge influx of tourists can also become irksome, particularly over the summer months.

If, however, you are looking for somewhere cosmopolitan in character, with great educational opportunities and endless leisure opportunities, you cannot go too far wrong with Cambridge.

    Working in Cambridge

Cambridge is said to be growing faster than China and while thankfully its population isn’t quite in the same neck of the woods, it certainly has a diverse economy, playing host to booming sectors such as research & development, pharmaceuticals, software consultancy, high value engineering, and various creative industries.

The area has a resident population of around 265,000 people, 180,000 employee jobs and over 10,000 businesses. These numbers are set to continue to rise further as Cambridge City and South Cambridgeshire councils roll out plans for the future.

Proposed new housing developments are in the works with plans for thousands of new homes, which will in turn bring an estimated 44,000 more jobs into the area.

The city’s workers enjoy average earnings of £40,000-a-year, far higher than elsewhere in the country, and unemployment is one of the lowest.

The workforce is also very well educated with more than 40% of the workforce possessing a higher education qualification, more than twice the national average.

    Cambridge Schools & Education

Of course, the first thing anyone thinks of when you mention ‘Cambridge’ is its world-renowned University.

Founded way back in 1209 and known globally as one of the top five universities in the world, its reputation speaks for itself.

Throw in the Cambridge campus of the Anglia Ruskin University and this amounts to a student population which makes up one-fifth of the entire town.

But it is not all about the universities here either.

State schools are administered by Cambridgeshire County Council, which maintains 251 schools in total and they are mostly of a particularly good standard, with a considerable number excelling during Ofsted inspections.

Spinney Primary School and Swavesey Village College are both cases in point which have received incredibly positive reviews.

Parkside Community College is an excellent choice for the 11–19-year age group. The school performs to “outstanding” levels reports Ofsted.
