Moving to Taiwan

Are you planning on moving to Taiwan. The island is situated off the mainland of China and has ultra-modern cities, although it follows the traditional Chinese culture. The main religions in Taiwan are Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism and beautiful temples can be found across the island.

Many younger expats move to Taiwan to teach English. Other areas of employment can be found in information technology and manufacturing of electronic games and computer-related products.

Many multinational firms have opened up branches across the island, providing employment opportunities for expats.

Accommodation if you are thinking of moving to Taiwan

Most expats will choose to rent an apartment; houses are not common in Taiwan and most will be small studio-type accommodation. Rental prices in the larger cities will be much higher than apartments further out.

Try to find accommodation with air conditioning, as the summers are extremely hot. Most expats choose not to buy a property in Taiwan due to the extremely high prices, foreign nationals wishing to purchase a home will need to meet strict criteria in order to do so.

Buses are probably the best way to travel in the cities and across country. They are safe, clean and plentiful and travel costs are very reasonable. There are always plenty of taxis in every city and these are also a comfortable and inexpensive way to travel.

Make sure you travel in the yellow government-regulated taxis and not the “wildcat” taxis”, which are considered to be less safe. If you own an international driving licence you are able to drive in Taiwan with some exceptions.

provided the Taiwanese can drive in your country with an international driving licence, you are allowed to drive in Taiwan. That said, driving is extremely difficult and you will need to allow some time to adjust to the chaotic driving style and traffic laws.
