Why Choose Lancashire?
Lancashire is a county full of contrasts, a place where rolling countryside meets bustling towns and vibrant seaside resorts. Covering over 1,100 square miles and home to around 1.4 million people, it offers residents the best of both worlds: modern amenities alongside wide open rural spaces.
The county town of Lancaster is steeped in history, while Preston acts as its administrative hub and thriving commercial centre. Along the coastline, the ever-popular Blackpool and scenic Morecambe Bay bring seaside charm, while inland you’ll find peaceful retreats like Arnside and Silverdale, both recognised as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Despite Lancashire’s industrial heritage, today nearly 80% of the county remains rural, with highlights such as the Forest of Bowland, a protected landscape as large as New York City. The county is also criss-crossed by the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, the longest canal in Britain, adding to its character and leisure appeal.
Lancashire’s economy is boosted not only by tourism alone. In 2022, the Lancashire‑14 sub-region generated a provisional GDP of £45.15 billion, making it the third-largest contributor in the Northwest, behind Greater Manchester and Merseyside
With excellent travel links via the M6 motorway and West Coast Main Line, commuting to Manchester, London, or even Glasgow is straightforward.
Whether you’re drawn by career opportunities, coast and countryside, or the rich cultural heritage, Lancashire offers a lifestyle that’s hard to beat.
Schools & Education in Lancashire
For families moving to Lancashire, education is a real strength of the county. As of the 2025 school census, there are 627 schools teaching more than 178,000 pupils, with a healthy mix of state, independent, and faith-based options. Parents seeking selective places will find just four grammar schools, including Clitheroe Royal Grammar and the two prestigious grammars in Lancaster, all of which achieve excellent results and remain highly sought-after.
When it comes to post-16 study, Lancashire has plenty of choice. Cardinal Newman College in Preston is rated Outstanding and boasts a 99.4% A-Level pass rate, while other well-regarded colleges such as Runshaw College, Nelson & Colne College, and Lancaster & Morecambe College provide a broad range of academic and vocational pathways. Impressively, 92.1% of students in Lancashire achieve at least two A-Levels, putting the county well above the national average.
For higher education, students don’t have to look far. Lancashire is home to four universities: the internationally respected Lancaster University, the newly renamed University of Lancashire (formerly UCLan), Edge Hill University, and the University of Cumbria’s Lancaster campus. Together, they give local and international students access to world-class teaching and research right on the doorstep.

Things to Do in Lancashire
Lancashire is a county packed with family-friendly days out, outdoor adventures, and cultural gems. Whether you love the seaside, countryside, or history, there’s always something to keep everyone entertained.
In the north, Morecambe Bay is famous for its sweeping sandy beaches, wildlife, and breathtaking sunsets. Families can enjoy water sports, cycling, or even join a chocolate-making workshop at Cocoa Hearts Chocolate Studio, a “sweet” treat for children and adults alike.
To the west, the iconic resort town of Blackpool is hard to beat for entertainment. From the world-famous Blackpool Tower and its spectacular ballroom to amusement parks, piers, and seasonal events, it’s a destination that never goes out of style.
For fresh air and stunning scenery, the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty offers miles of trails, picture-perfect stone villages, and plenty of opportunities for walking, cycling, and wildlife spotting.
History lovers won’t be disappointed either. Lancaster Castle, Samlesbury Hall, and the ancient abbey ruins at Sawley bring the county’s rich heritage to life. And with Liverpool and Manchester just a short journey away, world-class museums, theatres, and attractions are always within easy reach.
