Why move to Lancaster, Lancashire?
Lancaster, known as the “Brighton of the north” is much underrated.
It might not have the sea but Morecambe is close. The university is one of the best in the UK, making it feel a very arty sort of place. You can walk on the Dales. It’s a much prettier city than you would expect and it has a warehousey area by the riverside that’s been nicely restored. There’s a castle and a folly – what more could you need!
There are trains to Manchester taking 70 minutes. You can get to Blackpool in 50 minutes and Preston in 20 minutes. The M66 is conveniently close and you can take the car ferry to Ireland and the Isle of Man.
Good primary schools, which include Christ Church CofE, Bowerham and Dallas Road. St Paul’s CofE always does well in the Ofsted reports. Lancaster Royal Grammer for Boys is also very well regarded.
Plenty of good places to eat, Red Peppercorn in 13 Moor Lane does an interesting mix of cuisines from Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe. The Fenwick Seafood Pub in Hornby Road does a good mix of fish and seafood; it’s spacious and has real log fires in the winter. One place that deserves a mention is Amanda’s Big Baps – they serve the best bacon and eggs in town.
A good mix of other entertainment that you’d associate with a university City, live music and some really good real ale pubs that would make CAMRA proud. Robert Gillow in Market Street serves Hyde Original and Hyde Manchester Finest.
Property prices in Lancaster
It’s a big city so where should you buy? The southside near the university is a good bet, along with Williamson Park, which has great views. Watch St George’s Quay and the canal side for new developments. Average house prices are around £145,000, an increase of 2.19% over the last six months. You can pick up a very nice terraced cottage for £130,000 and there are some beautiful detached sandstone villas for £300,000.
