    Why Move to Hayling Island

There are plenty of good reasons to consider moving to Hayling Island.

While its only criticism is that it only has a single road connecting it to the mainland, it is a small price to pay considering the unique advantages it provides.

Hayling is full of charm. As soon as you cross the bridge, it really does feel like you are getting away from the hustle and bustle most suburban areas offer.

Life on the island is most definitely water focused.

Nestled between Langstone Harbour to the west and Chichester Harbour to the east, the island proves to be an ideal locale for marinas and sailing clubs.

Sailing is a big thing in Hayling and no wonder, the advantage of the excellent sailing conditions that Hayling offers year-round attracts a large yachting community.

When the wind blows, there is nothing more relaxing than watching the kite and windsurfers highlighting their impressive skills.

Interestingly, Peter Chivers, the inventor of the first sail-powered surfboard, lived on the island.

Hayling Island has three main beaches facing the Solent, totalling 3 miles of seafront.

These beaches are a mix of shingle foreshores with sandy stretches below the tideline. Additionally, the island has two more beaches, bringing the total to five.

The beaches on Hayling Island have received recognition, having won both the European Blue Flag and the Keep Britain Tidy Group – Seaside Award Flag for cleanliness and management.

The island’s amenities are rather limited but include several supermarkets, such as Co-op, Lidl, and Sainsbury, though in smaller stores. You need to travel off the island for larger supermarkets and high street retailers.

Add into the mix some good schools, a close-knit community, and a reputation for safety.

Choosing to reside on Hayling Island promises a lifestyle shift; relaxed and laid-back, without compromising on daily necessities.

    Hayling Island Schools & Education

There are five schools situated on the island and Hampshire County Council manages local education.

From their website, you can apply for a school place.

Two are Junior schools for children aged 7-11 years, and two are infant schools aimed at children aged 5-7 years.

Mengham Junior, Mengham Infant School, Mill Rythe Junior and Mill Rythe Infant School.

Ofsted has rated all the schools well, however, Mill Rythe Junior has managed to attain the highest rating of “outstanding.”

For children who are moving up to secondary-level education, there is only one school on the Island Hayling College. Last inspected in June 2023.

Ofsted reported that “the relatively new headteacher and the talented group of governors have a clear and ambitious vision for the school. They are determined that pupils will be ‘happy, healthy, and high performing.’

Alternatively, older students can travel off the island and attend the Portsmouth Grammar School or the private Portsmouth High School. Both come with excellent credentials.
