Things to Do in Canterbury
Being such a popular tourist location means that there is a host of things to do in your spare time within the city itself and its surrounds.
Canterbury Cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also one of the greatest examples of mediaeval Norman architecture in Britain, visited by millions each year it is a fantastic and unique attraction.
St. Augustine’s Abbey is an English Heritage property just outside the city walls and is home to the remains of the abbey founded by St. Augustine in 604.
Eager to learn more about the history of Canterbury and the surrounding area? Visit the Canterbury Heritage Museum. In an imposing medieval building on Stour Street, the museum includes the ancient Poor Priests’ Hospital, with its magnificent beamed ceilings.
Nearby Herne Bay and the surrounding countryside offer plenty of opportunities to explore Britain’s natural beauty.
Set in 90 acres of gorgeous parkland, children will love a trip to Howletts Wild Animal Park, home to exotic and endangered species including gorillas, lions, tigers and elephants.
Canterbury Property
In the city centre there are some very attractive medieval homes complete with brooks and duck ponds, however properties here are priced well above the national average, and are only affordable by those with significant wealth. Church Lane and Nackington Road are both very popular but expensive neighbourhoods.
If your budget is a little more modest, try looking in St Peters Grove. It is within the city walls, but a much more affordable part of the city.
Another sought-after area is St Dunstan’s and Westgate. The best suburban streets are south of the centre on the hills along the Old Dover Road and there’s plenty of flats to rent towards the university in the north-east.
Canterbury is also surrounded by beautiful countryside which is much in demand particularly the quaint villages of Chartham and Wye.
