    Why Move to Canterbury?

The amazing city of Canterbury is home to the UK’s first Cathedral known as the ‘Mother Church of the Anglican Communion”. This ancient building dominates the city’s skyline and has helped shaped its fortune throughout the centuries.

Made famous by Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and consistently voted as one of the most-visited cities in England, Canterbury’s heritage continues today with the site of St Martin’s church and St Augustine’s Abbey being idyllic tourist attractions.

A popular choice for relocation, the city holds excellent credentials; Plenty of open spaces to enjoy and brimming with things to do, from arts and entertainment, to nightlife and restaurants and access to some of the best education provision in Britain today.

A university city, Canterbury is home to three universities with a combined total of 31,000 students, creating a very vibrant, youthful atmosphere. Many students choose to stay in the town and surrounding villages after they graduate.

Canterbury’s Whitefriars shopping centre brings you the best in fashion and lifestyle brands with popular high street names while the more historic areas of the King’s Mile, Westgate and St Dunstan’s offer specialist and independent shops and boutiques.

Well-placed just an hour by train from London, the south-eastern high speed train means if you work in the capital, or fancy going on a major shopping spree in the capital, Canterbury is within an easy distance from which to do so.

Canterbury is ideal for those who are looking for a vibrant place to live with easy access to the countryside and coast but enjoy the financial benefits of working in London.

    Canterbury Schools & Education

Well known for its high level of education provision, in Canterbury you are spoilt for choice all the way from primary level right through to university.

Good primaries include St Peter’s Methodist, which was rated as “good” by Ofsted, St Stephen’s was also rated as “good with many outstanding features”.

Some of the best secondaries are Simon Langton Boys’ Grammar, St Anselm’s Catholic School, Barton Court Grammar, which are all considered as “good”; The Canterbury High School “very good” and The Archbishop’s School “outstanding”.

Home to three universities; University of Kent, Canterbury Christ Church University, the University for the Creative Arts.

The largest of which is the University of Kent, its main campus is situated over 600 acres. It provides outstanding teaching and excellent employability, with many opportunities to study and work abroad.

    Things to Do in Canterbury

Being such a popular tourist location means that there is a host of things to do in your spare time within the city itself and its surrounds.

Canterbury Cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also one of the greatest examples of mediaeval Norman architecture in Britain, visited by millions each year it is a fantastic and unique attraction.

St. Augustine’s Abbey is an English Heritage property just outside the city walls and is home to the remains of the abbey founded by St. Augustine in 604.

Eager to learn more about the history of Canterbury and the surrounding area? Visit the Canterbury Heritage Museum. In an imposing medieval building on Stour Street, the museum includes the ancient Poor Priests’ Hospital, with its magnificent beamed ceilings.

Nearby Herne Bay and the surrounding countryside offer plenty of opportunities to explore Britain’s natural beauty.

Set in 90 acres of gorgeous parkland, children will love a trip to Howletts Wild Animal Park, home to exotic and endangered species including gorillas, lions, tigers and elephants.

    Canterbury Property

In the city centre there are some very attractive medieval homes complete with brooks and duck ponds, however properties here are priced well above the national average, and are only affordable by those with significant wealth. Church Lane and Nackington Road are both very popular but expensive neighbourhoods.

If your budget is a little more modest, try looking in St Peters Grove. It is within the city walls, but a much more affordable part of the city.

Another sought-after area is St Dunstan’s and Westgate. The best suburban streets are south of the centre on the hills along the Old Dover Road and there’s plenty of flats to rent towards the university in the north-east.

Canterbury is also surrounded by beautiful countryside which is much in demand particularly the quaint villages of Chartham and Wye.
