Why Move to Hereford?
The cathedral city of Hereford is nestled in the renowned Wye Valley. Known for its breath-taking backdrop of untouched landscapes and ancient woodlands, it is also the historical capital city of Herefordshire, boasting one of the oldest and most magnificent Cathedrals in England, dating from 1079AD.
Although stunning, the city is not particularly known for its commuter links, which far from detracting from its appeal, makes for a real sense of community in the area. This is a place which offers a safe, balanced pace of life within a town bursting with character and packed full of exciting things to do and see.
The towns medieval centre has international importance. It boasts the award winning Mappa Mundi centre, housing the largest medieval map in the world and two of the most extensive Chained Libraries in existence.
Farming has played a major part in the history of the county of Herefordshire, and for many years the City of Hereford was the epicentre of this success.
Today business is still predominantly agricultural, and the area is famed for its cider and other natural produce. In recent years Engineering, Finance, IT and tourism related work have increased drastically; all contributing to the city’s growing economy.
Sitting on the River Wye and close to the Welsh border, Hereford may be a little remote for commuters, but for those who do travel for work, Cardiff and Birmingham are both around a 90-minute drive away. By rail, Cardiff can be reached in just under an hour and Birmingham an hour and a half.
Hereford itself is undergoing significant and continued regeneration, the city already has a brand-new leisure centre.
Retail is centred around two main shopping areas, The Old Butter Market and Maylords shopping centres.
Both have a good selection of high street brand names such as Marks & Spencer, Debenhams, River Island and H&M as well a great choice of coffee shops and restaurants. Both great places to shop, eat and relax in historic Hereford.
Hereford Schools & Education
Schools in Herefordshire are another of the cities selling points and there are plenty to choose from.
For primaries, some of the best include Bosbury Church of England Primary School and St Paul’s C of E, both of which received an ‘Outstanding’ rating at their last Ofsted inspections.
For secondaries, Hereford Academy, Wyebridge Sports College, Blackmarston School and Marlbrook School, all have very good reputations.
Hereford is home to five colleges including The National School of Blacksmithing, the oldest established Blacksmithing college in the UK, also the largest facility for training smiths in Europe.
It is also home to The Royal National College for the Blind. One of the top colleges in Europe for blind and visually impaired students, and one of only two in Britain.
New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering (NMITE) is a new high education provider in Hereford.
It focuses on Engineering but with an alternative approach to delivering qualifications within this sector. Although new, it is proving to be a popular choice for students living in the county.

There is a very good variety of housing in Hereford which caters for everyone from first time buyers to families as well as luxury homes for those with larger budgets.
Some neighbourhoods are home to properties which date back to the Victorian times. Handsome Georgian houses around the cathedral area are popular, as are those to the east end of town with great schools and plenty of large Edwardian family homes and Hampton Park.
There are plenty of picture postcard villages surrounding Hereford which are full of attractive properties such as Dilwyn, Weobley, and Eardisland.
For such a sought-after location it is a pleasant surprise to find that the average cost of a home is actually quite reasonable at £275,326, just over the National average but not excessively so.
