Why Move to Hucknall
Hucknall is a town in the Ashfield district of Nottinghamshire. Once a centre for knitting and then for mining, over the years Hucknall has managed to survive economic ups and downs, emerging as a popular location which offers a diverse history, reasonably priced housing, and great transport links.
The town boasts several claims to fame. Rolls-Royce made the first demonstration of a vertical take-off plane here, later to become the prototype to the more widely known Harrier Jump Jet. It is also the final resting place of poet and politician Lord Byron.
Along with a traditional market every Friday and Saturday, there is a selection of large supermarkets such as Asda and Aldi as well as a good smattering of independently owned stores.
Hucknall has a reputation for being the place for a good night out. Saturday night draws residents from neighbouring locations into the area soaking up the atmosphere of the towns many lively pubs and restaurants.
Green space is plentiful with several country parks and golf courses within Hucknall’s boundary. Within easy reach is the beautiful Peak District National Park, just over 40 minutes drive by car.
Large towns and cities in the region are easily accessible by road, rail, and tram. Nottingham City is 7 miles away, Mansfield 9 miles and Derby 18 miles.
Whether it is the towns convenient connections, the beauty of its surrounds or its buzzing nightlife, Hucknall holds an appeal to a diverse cross section of people.
Schools & Education
Education provision across the region is of a really good standard. From nursery through to higher education, plus children do not have to travel vast distances from home to reach schools, colleges or universities.
Within a radius of 1.5 miles there are nine primary schools serving the town. Most of these are Ofsted rated “good” with the Hucknall Flying High Academy having achieved an overall rating of “good” with “outstanding” features.
The closest high school is National Church of England Academy, however Ofsted reported that it “requires improvement”. The National C of E Academy is a mainstream, state funded senior school, following its last inspection, it was awarded a grading of “good” by Ofsted. Both these schools offer a sixth form for students aged 16-18 years.
Alternatively, students travel to nearby Nottingham for FE education. There are three colleges located in Nottingham: Bilborough College is solely a sixth form college; Nottingham College and New College Nottingham and the Confetti Institute of Creative Technologies.
Nottingham is also home to three universities, Nottingham Trent University, the University of Law and the University of Nottingham.
Things to do in Hucknall
Hucknall is home to Leen Valley Country Park and Bestwood Country Park as well as a host of play parks and green spaces.
In the centre of town is Hucknall Leisure Centre, which provides an excellent range of facilities including a 25-metre swimming pool, squash courts, sports hall, and a dance studio.
A visit to Sherwood Forest made famous by its historic association with the legend of Robin Hood, is a must-see attraction.
The area has been wooded since the end of the Last Glacial Period. Today, Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve encompasses 423.2 hectares, surrounding the village of Edwinstowe, the site of Thoresby Hall.
Rufford Abbey was originally a Cistercian abbey, it was converted to a country house in the 16th century after the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Part of the house was demolished in the 20th century, but the remains, standing in 150 acres of park and woodland, are open to the public.
White Post Farm provides a unique day out for the whole family. Occupying over 25 acres home to more than 3,000 animals. During your visit, you will see pregnant cows, pigs, sheep, and hens, as well as the chance to see some more unusual animals, including llamas, chinchillas, bats, reptiles, and spiders.
If you enjoy taking part in sport, there is a huge choice of sporting clubs available in the town including Hucknall Town FC, Hucknall Athletic FC and Hucknall Cricket Club.
With Nottingham’s city centre just a hop away, you have access to shopping on another level. A colourful mix of stylish independent retailers, specialist boutiques and big brand favourites line the streets of Nottingham. Plus, its packed with historical attractions, eateries, family venues and a whole lot more.
Property prices
A highly popular area within Nottingham, property for sale in Hucknall is in great demand and offers good value for money.
The average price for a home stood at £189,771 in October 2020. Property values are continuing to increase year on year and Hucknall has seen an unusually high rise of 7.20% over the past 12 months.
There are some very nice areas to choose from within the town itself such as Willow Avenue and new homes along Church Road. Plus, nearby Linby and Papplewick are also well worth a look if you are shopping within a higher price range. They are villages full of character and with some lovely stone-built homes.
