Why Move to Neath?
Located in an area of great natural beauty, Neath is both a town and an urban area situated in the Neath Port Talbot borough and historic county of Glamorgan, Wales.
Neath provides an excellent quality of life, priding itself on its diversity and relatively low cost of living.
The area is noted for its pleasant climate, characterised by cool summers and mild winters.
The surrounding region is packed with historical sites, variations of landscape, pristine beaches, wonderful country parks and even beautiful waterfalls. Easy to get to, Neath sits around 6 miles upstream from Swansea Bay on the Bristol Channel and 37 miles (well under an hour by car) from Cardiff, the Welsh capital.
There have been many changes to the town over the centuries. Although Neath Port Talbot is historically an industrial area, known for its manufacturing industries of iron, steel and tinplate, many of the former industrial sites are being repurposed for shopping and business centres.
Neath still retains its steelworks business and Corus (formally British Steel), employs in excess of 3,000 workers, but its economy today is much more diversified with light industry replacing a diminishing heavy industrial sector.
The service sector is becoming increasingly important too, and the opportunity for growth in this sector is very positive, with a number of good quality sites already established and further developments proposed. Access to beautiful open spaces, stunning scenery and low cost of living combined with extremely favourable property prices makes Neath an attractive option for relocation.
Neath Schools & Education
Welsh Government Ministers regulate almost all areas of education in Wales.
The education system largely resembles the structure set up in England, with maintained schools (most state schools) following the National Curriculum.
However, since the 2011/2012 school year, the entire curriculum for Key Stage 1 has been replaced in Wales by the Foundation Phase for all three to seven-year-olds.
The distinct difference is that the Welsh language is taught as a part of the curriculum in all schools up to the age of 16.
Primaries in the district include Blaenbaglan Primary School, Baglan Primary School, Melin Primary and St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School.
Children filter into a number of secondaries – Dwr Y Felin Comprehensive School, Cefn Saeson Comprehensive School and St Joseph’s RC School & 6th Form Centre are just a few of the secondaries available.
Students who wish to stay closer to home whilst they pursue higher education can attend Cardiff University.
A hugely popular choice, it has a reputation for world-class research and provides an excellent experience for its student body.
Aberystwyth University has regularly been placed in the UK’s top 50 universities in the main national rankings.
It was the first university to be awarded the prestigious prize “University of the year for teaching quality” by The Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide for two consecutive years (2018 and 2019).
