Why Move to Northumberland?
The UK has some very beautiful counties to choose from, each unique in its own way. If you are considering a move to Northumberland, you can expect to encounter huge swathes of countryside, a pristine coastline, and tons of history. The land has long been an English frontier zone, with it being bordered to the north by Scotland.
The region expanded rapidly during the Industrial Revolution. Many coal mines operated in Northumberland until the widespread closures in the 1970s and 1980s. In more recent years the county has had considerable growth in tourism. Visitors are attracted both to its natural scenic beauty and its historical sites.
Northumberland has more castles than any other county in England including Alnwick Castle and Hamburg Castle. Another notable landmark is the iconic Hadrian’s Wall, also known as the Roman Wall. 73 miles long, it served as a former defensive fortification of the Roman province of Britannia, begun in AD 122 in the reign of the emperor Hadrian.
What is more, it is one of the least populated counties so there is plenty of space to breathe and explore, ideal for those who are tired of living in claustrophobic cities and large towns.
However, not everyone wants to live in relative isolation. Northumberland has some great towns to choose from as well.
Alnwick is one of the county’s popular towns. A medieval market town that sits in the shadow of beautiful Alnwick Castle. A popular tourist destination, full of old buildings and cobbled streets.
Berwick-upon-Tweed is another lovely town. Sitting close to the Scottish border and at the mouth of the river Tweed. This little gem offers sea and countryside, friendly folk, and rich history.
Morpeth is located just 15 miles from the city of Newcastle towards the Southern end of the county. Morpeth is Northumberland’s historic County Town and has very stylish, upmarket shopping and amenities.
Travel connections are good by road, rail sea or air. Mainly serviced by smaller A roads, all parts of the county are reachable with relative ease. The Port of Tyne provides a sea crossing to Europe Ireland and also the Channel Islands. The county’s main international airport is in Newcastle. Newcastle airport has plenty of flights to destinations worldwide.
This northernmost English county will appeal to everyone young or old, it offers an unrivalled quality of life for all.
Working in Northumberland
Something we all seek to achieve is a good work-life balance. This is entirely possible in Northumberland. Few places provide the opportunity to leave work and literally within minutes find yourself amid stunning countryside, a perfect way to relax from a stressful day at the office.
The region is prosperous with plenty of jobs available across a number of interesting sectors. As we look to provide cleaner cheaper energy to the masses, Northumberland is investing heavily in offshore wind and energy projects.
In December 2020 Blyth offshore windfarm opened with its 5 massive turbines now supplying power to the county. The turbines need constant monitoring, repair, and maintenance and are often searching for new recruits.
Other areas which may suit your qualifications and experience include advanced manufacturing, creative industries, and health and life sciences.
The tourism industry is huge. 1.1 million British visitors and 50,000 foreign tourists spend a total of £162 million per year in Northumberland. It requires thousands of workers to keep its wheels turning.
Many multinational corporations dominate Northumberland’s industry: Coca-Cola, MSD, GE, and Drager all have significant facilities in the region Thousands of vacant positions are being advertised on some reputable human resource sites.

Northumberland Schools & Education
Moving to a new area is hard enough but it is multiplied by 100 if you add a family into the equation. Thorough research is the key to finding a balance between the right place to live and a place that has good schools for all age groups.
There are hundreds of schools within the county so you will need some assistance. As Northumberland County Council is responsible for new school applicants, it is the best place to start your search for a new school.
Northumberland has a completely comprehensive education system consisting of three tiers, lower, middle, and upper schools.
The state education system also has provision for children who have specific learning difficulties. The system as a whole works well and most children of all ages have achieved good test results.
The council has analysed data from the recently published Department for Education performance tables which shows that first and primary schools, in particular, are performing extremely well.
The council also reports that “Some of our secondary and high schools are doing very well against national benchmarking and some are doing extremely well in A level results, but we will be supporting and helping them to achieve even more in the future”.
For post 16 students, Northumberland College is a good choice. Its main campus is based in Ashington, in the southeast of the county and it has additional centres at Kirkley Hall, Hexham, and Berwick There are plenty of courses for students to choose from including some Higher Education courses.
Northumberland University is based in the far south of the county in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne. Regularly voted the best place in the UK for students it has built an excellent academic reputation.
