Leisure if Moving home to Fordingbridge

Interestingly, in mediaeval times the first Great Bridge was built in Fordingbridge, which is where it received its present name. The bridge spans the River Avon and it is a major feature of the town with its seven arches which you can see from the town’s pretty riverside park.

You can take a leisurely stroll along the river bank which is lined with an assortment of waterside plants and huge weeping willow trees. There is a children’s playground and sports facilities and a memorial garden, a really pleasant way to spend an hour or two.

When you are ready for lunch, why not pop into The George where good food is served daily. It is an 18th Century pub located right on the bank of the river Avon, it is Fordingbridge’s oldest inn, being established in 1593 (or possibly earlier).

It is said that in 1794 the infamous smuggler Captain Diamond was on his way to Salisbury with his illegal contraband of tea, rum and coffee smuggled from Guernsey, he and his gang stopped off at The George to divvy up the booty when soldiers and customs men arrived at the scene, whereupon a bloody battle followed.
