    Why Move to Cwmbran?

Located within the county borough of Torfaen South Wales, the relatively new town of Cwmbran was created specifically to provide workers for the South Wales Coalfield back in 1949. Comprising of the villages of Old Cwmbran, Pontnewydd, Upper Cwmbran, Henllys, Croesyceiliog, Llantarnam and Llanyrafon, its population has grown to around 50,000. This makes it the sixth largest urban area in Wales.

Although the town is predominantly suburban, Cwmbran has a hilly aspect. To its western and northern edges, the surrounding hills climb to over 1,000 feet. The two local rivers, Afon Llwyd and the Usk Valley River provide pretty green areas for local residents and visitors.

Aside from benefitting from easy access to the outdoors, the town has a more than adequate retail quarter offering plenty of supermarkets and clothing stores which are in a compact area within the town centre. The large Cwmbran Centre has a great selection of mainstream stores such as Primark. Matalan, TK Maxx and is home to the popular House of Fraser all alongside plenty of places to eat and socialise.

Investment in business parks and industrial estates has given Cwmbran a thriving commercial centre. Cwmbran Brewery is one of the best-known businesses in Upper Cwmbran. Many choose to commute to Bristol for work, one of the country’s most thriving cities for employment. Residents have access to some renowned sports facilities with Fairwater Leisure Centre being a popular option.

Uniquely, the town is known for its free town centre parking, unheard of anywhere else in the UK! Cwmbran is easy to get to and from, as sits close to the main M4, making it easy to get to Bristol and Southwest England, as well as to towns and cities across South Wales.

On top of all these wonderful amenities add affordable housing, a huge choice of schools and positive work/life balance and you might seriously be tempted by what Cwmbran has to offer.

Welsh is a compulsory subject in all maintained schools up to the age of 16.

Being a family friendly location schools are an important factor for new arrivals to the town.

Cwmbran offers some great schools with the likes of Ysgol Gymraeg Junior and Infants School – which achieved a green rating (meaning that it’s deemed ‘a highly effective school’) in the Welsh Government’s School Categorisation System.

The main secondary is Cwmbran High School. A large co-ed school with over 1000 pupils which sits west of the town centre.

Although Cwmbran does not have any private schools within its boundaries, there are a number located in Cardiff (18 miles away).

FE Education is available at several locations, the closest being Newport (6 miles). Gwent College (or its Welsh name of Coleg Gwen) is Wales’ largest further education college with campuses across five locations in the former county of Gwent and offering a huge choice of courses.

When it comes to higher education, Cardiff University is hard to beat having a recorded total enrolment of 33,260 in 2019. Its former students include three heads of state or government, two Nobel Prize winners and 15 fellows of the Royal Society.
