Why Move to Beverley?
In the Middle Ages Beverley in the East Riding of Yorkshire was one of England’s ten largest towns, having been swelled by a burgeoning wool trade. Nowadays this historic market town is home to around 30,000 and voted one of the best places to live in the UK.
Beverley is one of Yorkshire’s best-kept secrets.
Sitting on the edge of the stunning Yorkshire Wolds, it is renowned for its exquisite 13th Century Minster, lively market, thriving music scene, excellent flat racing, and a medieval skyline that remains refreshingly unspoiled.
Although Beverley is adequately well connected, it is its relative isolation that makes it so attractive. The city of Hull is 10 miles away and getting there takes around 25 minutes via car and 40 minutes by train.
Some lovely little villages surrounding Beverley sit amid the region’s Green Belt countryside, ideal for those searching for that balance of countryside and connectivity.
Beverley has more than enough amenities to suit most people’s requirements including a £70million retail development called the Flemingate Shopping Centre that opened in 2015. Situated near the minster, it includes a number of well-known retail stores plus the Parkway Cinema.
Asda, Aldi and Sainsburys all have stores in the town so doing your weekly food shop is made easy.
There is more than enough in the area to keep you entertained. Amongst its many attractions is a museum which recalls the life and times of the town as well as the East Riding Theatre, which opened in 2014 in a converted Baptist church and has Judi Dench as its patron.
This pretty location with its gorgeous Georgian architecture, a minster, green spaces, cobbled streets, racecourse, and great entertainment, is giving many towns in the region a run for their money.
Beverley Schools & Education
Many of the town’s primary schools fall into Ofsted’s category of “good”. However, Swinemoor Primary School, Keldmarsh Primary School, and Molescroft Primary School are all considered as “outstanding”.
For secondary education, Beverley High (girls) and Beverley Grammar (boys – the oldest state school in England) are both “outstanding””.
East Riding College has a campus in Beverley. The college offers various further education courses for school leavers and adults from the town.
Alternatively, Bishop Burton 5 miles away is the location of Bishop Burton College. A further education and higher education college specialising in agriculture and equine studies
A popular choice for higher education is the University of Hull. It is the UK’s 14th-oldest university and is home to the Hull York Medical School.
It has a proud heritage of academic excellence. A popular choice, the university has seen large-scale expansion in recent years to cater to its ever-growing number of students.
Things to do in Beverley
When you first move to a new home much time is spent on getting unpacked and settled in. Once you have had a chance to relax a little more you will want to explore your neighbourhood and find out more about what it can offer you in your spare time.
Beverley has plenty to keep you amused. Here are just a few of the exciting things you can look forward to.
The popular annual Beverley Folk Festival has grown considerably over its 34 year run and now enjoys an international profile. The whole town gets involved and events are held in several locations in the town.
Around 6000 people attend each year. This three-day celebration of music, workshops, comedy, and spoken word is not to be missed.
Beverley is famed for its racecourse. Its most prestigious races are the Hilary Needler Trophy for two-year-olds in May and Beverley Bullet Sprint over 5 furlongs in August. Just like Ascot, they have a lady’s day so you can get your best hat and togs on and enjoy the fun.
If you want a day at the seaside, the town is only ten miles from the coast. Beverley also lies amidst some of the most beautiful scenery in the East Riding of Yorkshire and makes the perfect place from which to explore the glorious Yorkshire countryside.

The club is based on the glorious Beverley Westwood pastureland, famous for its landmark Black Mill and Anti-Mill. The 18-hole course is one of Yorkshire’s finest and most natural layouts, enjoying outstanding views of the town and surrounding countryside.
Beverley Property
Beverley has become something of a property hotspot, a phenomenon coined ‘the Beverley bubble’ by local estate agents. It has become an attractive town for both house hunters and property developers.
The northern approach to the town is quite impressive, this is called North Bar Without. A street lined with elegant houses predominantly from the 18th and early 19th century.
Houses are not hugely expensive, and it seems that lots of people particularly young families, want to move here buoyed by three good secondary schools.
The average cost of a home is £252,678. Terraced homes are sitting at £225,074 and for a semi detatched home, you can expect to pay from £223,479.
