    Why Move to Bishop Auckland

Bishop Auckland (or just Bishop to the locals), is known as the gateway to Weardale, in County Durham. An important market town since medieval times, it stands high above a meander in the River Wear with commanding views of the surrounding countryside. Not least, one of its many attributes is that it is found within an easy drive of no less than six areas of outstanding beauty. Needless to say, open space is to be found in abundance.

Northumberland National Park, the North Pennies, the Lake District, the North Pennies, the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, and the North York Moors; are all nearby, quite an accolade.

This wonderful market town also sits close to several notable towns and cities such as Darlington, Durham, Newcastle, Middlesbrough, Sunderland, and Hartlepool.

The two-mile-long High Street is the main shopping and commercial focus for the town which has a strong retail sector and acts as the main hub for the surrounding area. Although the town is extremely proud of its historic roots, it by no means lives in the past.

Plans to transform Bishop Auckland into a world-class visitor destination of national importance have just moved a step closer following its recent successful bid for £33.2 million in government funding.

The funding will be distributed to a number of regeneration projects across the town which will help to attract an added 1.5 million visitors each year. The coming changes will substantially boost the county’s visitor economy by £240 million, creating almost 4,000 jobs. Not just a pretty location, the future is looking very promising for this County Durham town in more ways than one.

    Schools & Education

In the past, there were very few options when it came to choosing a school for your child as they automatically attended the school closest to home.

Much has changed now that you have the option of sending your child to a school of your choice.

Before you move, you will need to register and complete an application to the local council in order to secure a place in your chosen school.

The best way to start your search is by visiting County Durham City Council’s website.
You will find all sorts of useful information on schools covering Bishops including a comprehensive guide for new residents.

Around 14 primaries serve the town’s children and these schools filter into three secondaries.

State primaries that perform well include St Annes C of E, Evergreen Primary, Cockton Hill Infants, and Junior and St Wilfrid’s Roman Catholic Voluntary Aided Primary School.
Secondaries of note include Bishop Barrington Academy and St John’s Catholic School & Sixth Form College.

The town also has a college, Bishop Auckland College serving the Further Education and Higher Education fields.
