    Why Move to Bishop’s Stortford?

Bishop’s Stortford lies on the River Stort, a market town in the affluent East Herts district of Hertfordshire. Oozing history at every turn it is an extremely attractive and accessible place to live. Being just east of the M11, and sandwiched between London and Cambridge, it is a perfect location from which to commute.

Great mainline railway links mean you can reach London Liverpool Street in a little over 50 minutes. It also has handy airport links with London Stansted Airport a short hop away. In bygone days, the town was known as Steort-ford (meaning “Tail Ford”) at that time the Bishop of London purchased it for £8 in 1060.

In these modern times, residents have access to a well organised centre offering a mix of known high street brands a few individual stores and plenty of choice regarding eateries. Bishops Stortford was once home to Cecil Rhodes. He went on to become the world’s most famous diamond dealer and owner of De Beers, after whom Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), was named in 1895.

Despite its rich history, this busy little town does not have its feet continually in the past. There are 2,500 new homes in the pipeline being constructed by a consortium of builders; Bovis, Taylor Wimpey, Persimmon and Kier have all managed to gain planning permission.

Over the next few years Bishops Stortford is set to experience a rapidly expanding population, however, incorporated in these huge plans are the provision of a new primary school, a community centre and sports pavilion and other area enhancing projects adding to the towns already popular appeal.

    Bishop’s Stortford Schools & Education

Hertfordshire County Council is responsible for the region’s education provision.
Bishop’s Stortford follows the English school’s model of primary school, secondary school, and further education college.

There are 13 primary and 5 secondary schools (two of which are single sex). The town does not have any further education colleges for post-16 education, as all schools in Hertfordshire have sixth forms.

Highly regarded schools which have been rated as “outstanding” by Ofsted include St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School and St Mary’s Catholic Secondary School.

Several colleges are providing further education in neighbouring towns.
Harlow College is 23 minutes by rail. The college is distinguished by its success rates and its Journalism Centre, which it has operated since 1964.

Alternatively, Hertford Regional College has 2 campuses, one in Ware and the other in Broxbourne. Major redevelopments at both campuses give students access to fantastic new award-winning facilities.
