    The town also hosts a University of Derby campus the university provides over 300 study programmes at undergraduate level, short courses, foundation degrees and postgraduate degrees which cover most academic disciplines.

    The Buxton & Leek College formed by the August 2012 merger of the university with Leek College is also situated in the town.

    Things to do in Buxton

    Often referred to as the Festival Town or the cultural capital of the Peak District, Buxton has an annual programme of festivals and events to attend.

    As well as hosting films, concerts, plays and comedy, the opera house venue and the adjoining Pavilion Arts Centre are the base for the Buxton’s International Festival usually held in July.

    Other popular festivals include the Festival Fringe, Buxton Food Festival and Buxton Military Tattoo.

    Buxton Museum & Art Gallery – Discover the archaeology, geology, art, and history of the Peak District.

    Poole’s Cavern – The first “Wonder of the Peak”. This great limestone cavern is one of the finest show caves in England.

    St Anne’s Well – A well-known water fountain where you can sample Buxton’s famous mineral water free of charge.

    Pavilion Gardens – 23 acres of restored pleasure gardens including lakes, flower beds and shaded walks. And for the young at heart, there is an extensive children’s playpark, adventure playground, outdoor gym equipment and miniature railway.

    Located in the heart of the Peak District, Buxton is surrounded by a network of public footpaths, trails and cycle tracks, rock formations for a challenging climb and wildlife just waiting to be discovered.
